Have you changed the config for "nscd?" If not, then don't worry about it.
Since I have no idea what nscd is I think we can rule that out. Is it network security daemon?
Since it's time-based, you could do a ``tcpdump'' of traffic around the time this is happening, and see what's going on.
It appears to be time based. Nevermind it's happening as I type. I pinged the gateway between email #2 and 3. maurerfranklin@VMXLinux:~> fetchmail fetchmail: couldn't find canonical DNS name of mail.comcast.net (mail.comcast.net) fetchmail: Query status=11 (DNS) POP3 connection to mail.comcast.net failed: temporary name server error. fetchmail: Query status=2 (SOCKET) fetchmail: No mail for franklinmaurer at mail.comcast.net maurerfranklin@VMXLinux:~> -- E.F.Maurer Using SuSE 9.0 Pro

name service caching daemon. AFAIU, it caches different services, like passwords, logins, etc. Not your problem.

From what I remember, you have a router plugged into your ISP, and your SuSE box into your router and the one with the problem. Assuming that I understood that correctly, I would suggest setting up bind9 (DNS) as a caching server (i.e. just have the forwards configured to forward to your ISPs name servers. Then, in your dhclient.conf, add prepend domain-name-servers 127.0.0.1; which will add your local caching name server in addition to your ISPs. I think this will take care of your problem. Sounds more complicated than it is. Joe you're scaring me. 8-} That's my setup exactly.

I went into yast2 > network services > dns server . I had it start at boot. But I'm confused about the forwards you mentioned.

I uncommented this line. There is also more in this file ... prepend domain-name-servers 127.0.0.1; send dhcp-lease-time 3600; request subnet-mask, broadcast-address, time-offset, routers, domain-name, domain-name-servers, host-name; require subnet-mask, domain-name-servers; timeout 60; retry 60; reboot 10; select-timeout 5; initial-interval 2; script "/sbin/dhclient-script"; #media "-link0 -link1 -link2", "link0 link1"; #reject 192.33.137.209; Thanks -- E.F.Maurer Using SuSE 9.0 Pro

Look in /etc/named.conf. I have never used Yast to do this one. Which version is this, mine (8.2) only has DNS and Host Name, which wouldn't be editing named.conf. Maybe you have 9.0 and they have added this capability. Anyway, try editing /etc/named.conf, it is a simple enough change, and easily done following the comments in this file.

This should allow your name server to always be reachable, and it will cache the addresses of your recently used names. I found the forwarders in named.conf(9.0). There is no prepend line though. I'm not sure what file i was editing in Yast2 ... it looks like some of the info is in named.conf but some must be somewhere else. They've added alot to yast, not sure if that's good or bad.

Good.

That was the line you uncommented in dhclient.conf. It effectively adds your name-servers to the info you get via dhcp from your router.

I'm sure its good. Hope this gets you going/staying online. -- Joe & Sesil Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Web Address: http://www.mydestiny.net/~joe_morris Registered Linux user 231871 God said, I AM that I AM. I say, by the grace of God, I am what I am.
