SuSE 10.0 and Gnome
Hi, I've installed SuSE 10.0 on intel hardware with the defaults. So, I have KDE. I'd like to try Gnome, but I can't figure out how to log into it as a desktop. On my logon screen, it is not one of the choices for an environment. Shouldn't the default install have put it there? If not, how can I install it and try it out? tia, Matt

did you install GNOME? If you just used "defaults" I think that only one X environment is installed. If installed, it would/should appear as a choice on your logon screen. Peter
Hi Peter, It isn't there... can you tell me how to install it? Is it one package? If so, is it gdm? because I tried installing that and it still doesn't show up... thanks, matt Peter Van Lone wrote:

The main package is gnome_desktop but you need a bunch more, also. Plus, you would want some of the "extra" stuff that is not required, just to get a sense of gnome apps. I am by far no expert here ... perhaps some others can suggest what the minimum package set is that will get you a working gnome to login to. Peter

actually, I guess gnome_desktop is NOT the "main package". I really don't know exactly what should be installed to accomplish this ... sorry. I do know that if you select both desktops during the install, it will just work. Peter

Hi Matt & Peter: I'm running 10.0 with GNOME as my primary desktop environment and have the following repositories defined in YaST's 'Installation Source' module (I'm providing the whole list for convenience; note the 'supplementary' for GNOME): protocol: http server: packman.rsync.zmi.at directory: suse/10.0 protocol: http server: ftp4.gwdg.de directory: pub/linux/misc/suser-guru/rpm/10.0/ protocol: ftp server: ftp4.gwdg.de directory: pub/suse/i386/10.0/inst-source-extra protocol: ftp server: ftp4.gwdg.de directory: pub/suse/i386/10.0/SUSE-Linux10.0-GM-Extra protocol: ftp server: ftp4.gwdg.de directory: pub/suse/i386/supplementary/GNOME/update_for_10.0/yast-source protocol: ftp server: ftp4.gwdg.de directory: pub/opensuse/distribution/SL-10.0-OSS/inst-source protocol: ftp server: ftp4.gwdg.de directory: pub/opensuse/distribution/SL-10.0-OSS/inst-source-java Open the 'Software Management' module, select 'Selections' in the 'Filter' field, top-left. Enable the 'GNOME System' checkbox. Click the 'Check Dependencies' button if automatic checking isn't enabled. Resolve any dependency conflicts (Important!) before proceeding. If you get stuck in a dependency loop, post the error messages and I'll compare it with my installation here. hth & regards, Carl

Well the default install asks you for which desktop you want to install, it adds certain libraries from Gnome as there are various apps that you'd normally want even under KDE that require them. That being said, you can use YaST -> software management, to install gnome, check the GNOME System in the Filter: Selections. I t will install the needed packages and add gnome to the login type menu.

Hi All, Thanks for all of your help. I did find out how to install it, but I had a lot of installation conflicts -- to many of them to want to wade through them all. Since my linux box is just a sandbox, I just reinstalled linux from scratch and chose gnome... I may try getting kde on here now that gnome is installed first. Thanks again for everybody's help... you were all great, Matt Greg Wallace wrote:
