[opensuse] Disabling display power management
Hi All, I'm trying to disable the display power management, with absolutely no success at all. I'm running 11.3, but have had this problem in various earlier releases on various machines. None of the settings in the power management module of System Settings seems to have any effect. I have tried setting the kernel boot parameters apm=off and acpi=off (which used to be necessary some years ago on some machines ...) Basically, it's very annoying to have the screen blanking every 10 minutes, especially when streaming TV or watching a DVD. So, does anyone know where I might find the necessary setting(s) to disable the display power management entirely? I'm running 11.3 x86_64 with a Radeon HD 4350 graphics card. These tools should disable the blanking while they run. If they don't, and it is not configurable, report the bug.

I know how to disable power-off of the monitor, ie, dpms. It is an option in the xorg file. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. I have already reported long ago: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=581035 but seems nobody is interested to fix. This was the main reason i migrated from Ubuntu to SUSE and now the same problem of SUSE.

Well, that bug report doesn't have sufficient info. You have to specify where and how exactly you disable that feature, what desktop, etc. You will have to demonstrate that it is not user error, because for other people apparently it works. Bug solvers are busy people, so you have to facilitate their work. And fight for your bug. But I was referring to another report. If, for example, you use "kaffeine" or "totem" to watch a video, and it gets interrupted by the screensaver or display blanking, then report an specific bug against totem or kaffeine. One by one. After you have searched that it is not a configuration of that particular program. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. I have not tried jet but I think you could try to de-install the programs for power management (or install an other program for that). That could be problematic. If you have a look at xorg.conf(5, you can see interesting things: Option "BlankTime" "time" sets the inactivity timeout for the blank phase of the screen- saver. time is in minutes. This is equivalent to the Xorg server's -s flag, and the value can be changed at run-time with xset(1). Default: 10 minutes. Option "StandbyTime" "time" sets the inactivity timeout for the standby phase of DPMS mode. time is in minutes, and the value can be changed at run-time with xset(1). Default: 20 minutes. This is only suitable for VESA DPMS compatible monitors, and may not be supported by all video drivers. It is only enabled for screens that have the "DPMS" option set (see the MONITOR section below). Option "SuspendTime" "time" sets the inactivity timeout for the suspend phase of DPMS mode. time is in minutes, and the value can be changed at run-time with xset(1). Default: 30 minutes. This is only suitable for VESA DPMS compatible monitors, and may not be supported by all video drivers. It is only enabled for screens that have the "DPMS" option set (see the MONITOR section below). Option "OffTime" "time" sets the inactivity timeout for the off phase of DPMS mode. time is in minutes, and the value can be changed at run-time with xset(1). Default: 40 minutes. This is only suitable for VESA DPMS compatible monitors, and may not be supported by all video drivers. It is only enabled for screens that have the "DPMS" option set (see the MONITOR section below). Option "DPMS" "bool" This option controls whether the server should enable the DPMS extension for power management for this screen. The default is to enable the extension. But then, the desktop (KDE) can override these settings, thus the trick Tom Taylor mentions could work if that is the case (xset s noblank -dpms) However, all that should not be necessary. I understand the problem is that the blanking occurs when the OP is watching a video in Kaffeine. It is the responsability of kaffeine to avoid the blanking to occur, nobody should have to disable powersaving features (which are a good thing). Kaffeine can use either the xinelib engine or gstreamer. I know that one of the expert configurations of xine is that it can emulate a keypress. In the standar xine-ui, go to settings, gui, "screensaver reset interval", which by default is 10 seconds. So, if kaffeine is interrupted by the screensaver (in full screen mode), it is a bug you have to report in Bugzilla. Whatever is the cause, it has to be resolved. It could happen that xine-ui doesn't integrate perfectly with kde, but kaffeine is a kde program, so it has to handle this perfectly. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. Please tell me how to disable power-off completely. I am fed up with it. Note for example of browser pluging which play video and do not prevent screen blanking. I wonder why I disabled all power saving features in Gnome and KDE and still the screen goes black after 10 minutes. It is a hell when I watch a film with my girlfriend and have to move mouse periodically. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I already wrote how to do it, or all I know about it. Please re-read my previous post.

I think that if the application is not full screen it will not disable the screen saver. Again, report that as a bug in Bugzilla if you want it solved. As it is a problem for you and I don't have that problem, it is you who has to report it. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. Hello, I have the same problem. If you are using KDE 4.4 you can use the following script to simulate user activity. IMHO it's a good workaround. ---- #!/bin/bash # start applications $* & # simulate user activity every 30s while applications running while jobs | grep -q Running do qdbus org.kde.krunner /ScreenSaver SimulateUserActivity sleep 30 done ---- save it as "simulateUserActivity.sh" call it: ./simulateUserActivity.sh kaffeine kind regards, Sebastian Am Samstag, 17. A slightly more elegant way is to add the following script into Start > Configure Desktop > Advanced > Autostart: /home/user/bin/Xscreen.sh #! /bin/bash # Xscreen.sh xset s noblank -dpms exit 0 # end Xscreen.sh That's a dash (-) before the dpms. Just the 'xset ..' in your ~/.xinitrc does the same trick (at the end, with "Add your own lines" comment. -dnh -- "And all those exclamation marks, you notice? Five?
