Could be something as simple as the device-mapper having a file handle to the partition already. Don't know if you've fiddled in that area at all though. I haven't fiddled around with that, at least not intentionally. But this was

I heard of this problem another time, and we couldn't track it.
The /dev/mapper thing is the result of a bios raid install. Yast creates those things to map multiple disk to a single partition in raid. -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E.
