Subject: [SLE] default gateway in suse 7.1
hello
on my friend's pc is installed suse 7.1. The
default gateway should be 192.168.0.1, but
whatever we try, it stays on 19.168.0.1, we have
tried several reinstalls, several times manually
typing it in by 'route add default etc' but after
every reboot that line is gone and back to the
wrong one, resulting in no internetaccess until
solved by manually putting it in again. We are
quite sure that during setup we type it the right
way, why is suse saying 19..... when it should be
192....?
this route thing is working nearly perfectly in
redhat on my system, however, occasionally my
system puts the gateway right but then says it is
situated on eth0, which it isn't of
course....resulting also in no
internetaccess.......
also in X is coming everyting lightblue with a
little bit lightgreen, nearly no color, my friend
has a s3 card with 1 mb memory, would that be the
problem for x?
thanks for any answer
henny

Hi Henny,
We might be able to help if you could answer the
following questions:
1. Does the PC need to go through a router to get
Internet access? If yes, is this router
192.168.0.1? If not, why set the default gateway
to 192.168.0.1?
2. Is eth0 or eth1 the nic that makes the
connection to the router (thus Internet)?
3. If eth1 is the connection to the
router/internet, did you perhaps also set a
default gateway for eth0?
4. Did you try to change the default gateway with
Yast, or did you just do a route add etc.?
About the "funny" colours: I must say that a
videocard with only 1Mb mem sounds oldish (are
you sure this card is still OK?). You could try
to run sax2 again. This helped me with my S3
card. I've noticed that SaX doesn't always choose
the correct videocard/chip during initial setup,
but does a wonderful job the second time around
in autoconfig mode. If not, you can always choose
the right card/chip by hand.
mazzel, Marcel
