Hi again, I am new to using SuSE 8.1, as well as with apt4rpm and still consider myself a newbie in general vis a vis SuSE. I have three problems with apt, that I believe may be interrelated: 1) The first problem is listed below. It looks to me as if either the structure of the repository has changed or there is some other sort of problem with it. Alternatively, I could of course edit the /etc/apt/sources.list, but I am unsure as to what is supposed to reside in these repository directories: Failed to fetch ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt/SuSE/8.0-i386/base/pkglist.packman-i386 Unable to fetch file, server said '/pub/linux/suse/apt/SuSE/8.0-i386/base/pkglist.packman-i386.bz2: No such file or directory. ' Failed to fetch ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt/SuSE/8.0-i386/base/pkglist.packman-noarch Unable to fetch file, server said '/pub/linux/suse/apt/SuSE/8.0-i386/base/pkglist.packman-noarch.bz2: No such file or directory. ' Failed to fetch ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt/SuSE/8.0-i386/base/srclist.packman-i386 Unable to fetch file, server said '/pub/linux/suse/apt/SuSE/8.0-i386/base/srclist.packman-i386.bz2: No such file or directory. ' Failed to fetch ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt/SuSE/8.0-i386/base/srclist.packman-noarch Unable to fetch file, server said '/pub/linux/suse/apt/SuSE/8.0-i386/base/srclist.packman-noarch.bz2: No such file or directory. ' Reading Package Lists... Done Likewise, I am unsure if the following is a related error to the above or something different entirely: Collecting File Provides... Error! E: could not open RPM package list file /var/state/apt/lists/ftp.gwdg.de_pub_linux_suse_apt_SuSE_8.0-i386_base_pkglist.packman-i386: E: Problem opening /var/state/apt/lists/ftp.gwdg.de_pub_linux_suse_apt_SuSE_8.0-i386_base_pkglist.packman-i386 E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened. 2) I had to install synaptic using the latest rpm as a result of the above problems. That shouldn't cause the following error though, should it? valhalla:/home/brian # synaptic Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server Xlib: Invalid XDM-AUTHORIZATION-1 key (failed key comparison) Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0.0 3) The following seems to be related to the second series of error messages in #1, but I unfortunately am at a loss: valhalla:/home/brian # apt-get install ooopi Reading Package Lists... Done Collecting File Provides... As a side note, the above apt-get install command is for "ooopi" a dictionary utility to be used with OpenOffice.org. I haven't found anything in the sources.list that includes OpenOffice.org, of course it would depend on whether OpenOffice.org is included in the repository or not. Does anyone know, or is there another repository that contains OpenOffice.org bits? Cheers, Brian

Did you su or use sux? Try sux -c synaptic.

All your problems should go away with a new sources.list and with sux rather than su. As for ooopi, I haven't seen it on apt / synaptic. The only thing that rings a bell is oooqs. I think it's a oo quick starter. -- Franklin Maurer Using SuSE 8.1

OK, after ISP problems and connection problems to the repository, apt seems to be on track. There is still a problem with synaptic. The command sux -c synaptic returns a "segmentation fault" error, with a fading window, while the command "synaptic", logged in as sux just prompts a fading window. Any ideas? Not really. What do you mean by a fading window? Is it the latest version of synaptic? You could also try on the apt-list. Sorry i don't know the address but it's on the apt4rpm site. -- Franklin Maurer Using SuSE 8.1

Tried the apt4rpm list at sourceforge. No response. I am using the latest available synaptic rpm. I am writing this is in Win2k, so I can't check the version number right now. What I mean by a fading window is a window that barely appears and then fades away, without synaptic actually coming to view. Sort of like an app crash or kill during the startup process. Sounds like you have a corrupted database. Just run apt-get update from a command line until it finishes with no errors (and rebuilds its databases), and you should be back in business. -- Joe Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Web Address: http://www.mydestiny.net/~joe_morris Registered Linux user 231871 God said, I AM that I AM.
