KDE 3.4.2 on SuSE 9.3
Hi Everybody. Has anyone tried upgrading their 9.3 installs with the KDE3.4.2 RPMs located at: ftp://ftp.kde.org/pub/kde/stable/3.4.2/SuSE/ix86/9.3/ and If so, have there been problems? -- JAY VOLLMER JVOLLMER@VISI.COM

I always stick to the supplementary updates that are provided in YaST-compatible format. I used those recently released to upgrade to KDE 3.4.2. There were only a few anomalies: - Upon completing the update, I logged out so all the new code could be loaded / activated. The X.org server (and / or KDM) never came back. I rebooted and all was well. - Kat has appeared in my tray (unbidden, though not really unwelcome), but it does not work. I can bring up its control panel and configure an index, but attempting to start the indexer has no effect. Running katdaemon from the command line produces this: % katdaemon katdaemon: symbol lookup error: /opt/kde3/lib/libkatdaemon.so.0: undefined symbol: _ZTV12KAboutDialog - As usual with any KDE or X configuration change, many of my desktop icons were pushed to the top of the screen. Other than that, all seems well, so far.
and If so, have there been problems?
As above. Nothing serious, except perhaps the breathless few minutes while I waited to see if the reboot would bring back my X server.

Use an FTP client to browse your favorite SuSE mirror(s) (or use a Web browser if the mirror uses HTTP) and look for directories fitting this pattern (from the ANL mirror at "ftp:mirror.mcs.anl.gov"): "pub/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_9.3/yast-source/". When you find a supplementary YaST directory, program it into a new source in the YaST "Change Source of Installation" module. Randall Schulz

Rather than do this all over again in proper detail, I'll refer you to the archive: - <http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-kde/2005-Mar/0093.html> Be sure to read the whole thread, especially the first few replies where some corrections got posted. Also take care to adjust the repository paths for the version of SuSE Linux on which you're installing. Randall Schulz

then it might not be avail for 9.2 i tried this and dont see any new kde packages for 9.2 why do you search for cyrus?

That part is no longer relevant. There were some missed dependencies in the RPM packages for the initial 3.4 release for SuSE wich lead to some necessary packages not getting installed. Those problems were subsequently fixed and I did not encounter that problem in the following 3.4.1 and 3.4.2 releases. Randall Schulz

In Yast, and as root, you define a new site in "Change Source Of Installation." You add a new ftp site as "Server Name:" ftp.gwdg.de and "Directory on Server:" as /pub/linux/suse/ftp.suse.com/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_9.3/yast-source Make certain you "enable" that site a the bottom. Then, use add/remove software to get the updates. To get ALL new files, choose packages at the top, then the very last option on the tree at the left. Then, you'll see all new files with the description in blue on the right. Click on the "box" for each one, and tell it "ok." Remember to check the bottom option to remove all files after update. Vincent, Don't use --force or you can surely mess up a system doing so. Force should be reserved for very special cases. Drop all the new KDE packages into a directory of your choosing and from the shell: rpm -Uhv *.rpm Don't forget to run ldconfig and /sbin/SuSEconfig afterwards. Then restart KDE by ctrl-alt-F1, login as root, init 3, then init 5! It's quite likely you will get some warnings. Check to see if that program is installed to begin with and if you want/need it on your system that you will go to the trouble to fix the dependencies. No need to uninstall the old as the rpms will take care of those things. Also remember that SuSE sometimes splits the files into different rpms installed on your system, so don't just download what you think you have installed, get them all. That way you'll keep the programs you have and get a few more nice new ones on the way. :o) regards, Lee -- --- KMail v1.8.2 --- SuSE Linux Pro v9.2 --- Registered Linux User #225206 There's no problem so awful that you can't add some guilt to it and make it even worse! ...Calvin & Hobbes

hey all,
A question about KDE 3.4.2 what is the best to do?
a) uninstall kde 3.4.0 and install the new packages
or
b) do the install as rpm -U --force --nodeps *.rpm
Neither. Use YaST... 1. Go to "Change Source of Installation". 2. Click on "Add->FTP" 3. Put "ftp.gwdg.de" in server field 4. Put "pub/linux/suse/ftp.suse.com/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_9.3/yast-source" in the directory field. 5. Click OK. Now... 1. Go to "Install and Remove Software". 2. Change Filter to "Package Groups". 3. Select "zzz All" at bottom of list. 4. From menu at top, select Package -> All in this list -> Update if newer version available. 5. Change Filter to "Installation Summary". You should see many KDE packages selected for update. 6. Click Accept and finish up the install as usual. After this, you may need to restart X to get your GUI back again. (I needed to.) I did this by logging in at one of the text mode consoles (Ctrl-Alt-F1) and entering: # telinit 3 # telinit 5 I also found that "My Computer" didn't work right until I powered off/on the system. Probably didn't need to be that drastic but I didn't feel like fiddling around. This may not be a problem for you -- I have been having "My Computer" problems all along.

Why not add the source as a YaST source and let it work out all of the deps? Only use --force as a last resort and only if you know what you are doing. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998 "The day Microsoft makes something that doesn't suck is probably the day they start making vacuum cleaners." -Ernst Jan Plugge
