[opensuse] 11.2 network install
I'm doing a network install of 11.2 and having my usual chaotic time. Let's just say it's a good job the machine is actually sitting next to me and not in a remote data centre! The instructions at http://en.opensuse.org/Network_Install gave errors when booting the install kernel - something about a missing root= in the kernel command line. I haven't investigated why. So I used setupgrubfornfsinstall. That worked. I had my usual problem with DHCP but I think that's a local issue with our server and I just typed the addresses in instead. One little problem was that ssh refused to connect because the key has been changed but I nuked the old key in known_hosts to get around that. I started yast and got as far as choosing the partitions. After that, yast died and the ssh session shows: error: cannot open Packages index using db3 - No such file or directory (2) terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::runtime_error' what(): locale::facet::_S_create_c_locale name not valid YaST got signal 6 at YCP file String.ycp:128 /usr/lib/YaST2/startup/YaST2.call: line 288: 4217 Aborted $OPT_FBITERM y2base "$Y2_MODULE_NAME" $Y2_MODE_FLAGS $Y2_MODULE_ARGS $Y2_MODE $Y2_UI_ARGS unicode_stop skipped on /dev/pts/0 inst-sys:~ # Connection to pcx36 closed by remote host. I've no idea what that means. Does anybody have a clue? Thanks, Dave -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Actually, I got a little bit further. Or rather I repeated the process and watched more closely ...
After that, yast died and the ssh session shows:
error: cannot open Packages index using db3 - No such file or directory (2)
This error occurred after I chose the partitions and before the screen to setup a user was displayed.

This block all appeared after I setup a user and a root password. I've still no idea what it means. Does anybody have a clue? Thanks, Dave -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I've tried changing LANG and LC_ALL to various values (blank, 'C' etc) but it doesn't seem to make any difference. y2log shows this at the end of its run: 2010-02-15 14:59:34 <1> 10.14.0.9(7366) [Interpreter] clients/hwinfo_proposal.ycp:34 Calling YaST client hwinfo_proposal 2010-02-15 14:59:34 <1> 10.14.0.9(7366) [YCP] InitHWinfo.ycp:93 memory: [$["bus":"None", "bus_hwcfg":"none", "class_id":257, "model":"Main Memory", "old_unique_key":"4srm.CxwsZFjVASF", "resource":$["mem":[$["active":true, "length":1072561152, "start":0]], "phys_mem":[$["range":1073741824]]], "sub_class_id":2, "unique_key":"rdCR.CxwsZFjVASF"]] 2010-02-15 14:59:34 <1> 10.14.0.9(7366) [YCP] InitHWinfo.ycp:181 System string: and when I turn debugging on for a later run, the last line is followed by this: 2010-02-15 17:13:33 <1> 10.14.0.9(14857) [YCP] InitHWinfo.ycp:181 System string: 2010-02-15 17:13:33 <0> 10.14.0.9(14857) [liby2] SymbolEntry.cc(setValue):107 SymbolEntry::setValue (initialized@0x9f09818 = 'true') 2010-02-15 17:13:33 <0> 10.14.0.9(14857) [libycp] ExecutionEnvironment.cc(popframe):115 Pop frame 0xa05bc68 2010-02-15 17:13:33 <0> 10.14.0.9(14857) [libycp] ExecutionEnvironment.cc(pushframe):105 Push frame String::FormatSizeWithPrecision (memory_size, 2, true) 2010-02-15 17:13:33 <0> 10.14.0.9(14857) [liby2] SymbolEntry.cc(setValue):107 SymbolEntry::setValue (bytes@0x80b1328 = '1073741824') 2010-02-15 17:13:33 <0> 10.14.0.9(14857) [liby2] SymbolEntry.cc(setValue):107 SymbolEntry::setValue (precision@0x80b13c0 = '2') 2010-02-15 17:13:33 <0> 10.14.0.9(14857) [liby2] SymbolEntry.cc(setValue):107 SymbolEntry::setValue (omit_zeroes@0x80b1478 = 'true') 2010-02-15 17:13:33 <0> 10.14.0.9(14857) [liby2] SymbolEntry.cc(setValue):107 SymbolEntry::setValue (units@0x80b5be8 = '["B", "kB", "MB", "GB", "TB"]') 2010-02-15 17:13:33 <0> 10.14.0.9(14857) [liby2] SymbolEntry.cc(setValue):107 SymbolEntry::setValue (index@0x80b5c38 = '0') 2010-02-15 17:13:33 <0> 10.14.0.9(14857) [liby2] SymbolEntry.cc(setValue):107 SymbolEntry::setValue (whole@0x80b5ce8 = '1.07374e+09') 2010-02-15 17:13:33 <0> 10.14.0.9(14857) [liby2] SymbolEntry.cc(setValue):107 SymbolEntry::setValue (whole@0x80b5ce8 = '1.04858e+06') 2010-02-15 17:13:33 <0> 10.14.0.9(14857) [liby2] SymbolEntry.cc(setValue):107 SymbolEntry::setValue (index@0x80b5c38 = '1') 2010-02-15 17:13:33 <0> 10.14.0.9(14857) [liby2] SymbolEntry.cc(setValue):107 SymbolEntry::setValue (whole@0x80b5ce8 = '1024.') 2010-02-15 17:13:33 <0> 10.14.0.9(14857) [liby2] SymbolEntry.cc(setValue):107 SymbolEntry::setValue (index@0x80b5c38 = '2') 2010-02-15 17:13:33 <0> 10.14.0.9(14857) [liby2] SymbolEntry.cc(setValue):107 SymbolEntry::setValue (whole@0x80b5ce8 = '1.') 2010-02-15 17:13:33 <0> 10.14.0.9(14857) [liby2] SymbolEntry.cc(setValue):107 SymbolEntry::setValue (index@0x80b5c38 = '3') 2010-02-15 17:13:33 <0> 10.14.0.9(14857) [liby2] SymbolEntry.cc(setValue):107 SymbolEntry::setValue (precision@0x80b13c0 = '0')

Sadly, this is still the case. Does anybody know what these yast logs mean? Thanks, Dave -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

There simply might no YaST developer be on this list.
The machine is now running Ubuntu. Their network installation works.
Also the SUSE network install works very well. I've used it many, many times for remote upgrades without any issue. With several versions of SUSE Linux Enterprise and openSUSE. If you don't follow the defined bug report workflow you can't expect qualified feedback. See http://en.opensuse.org/Submitting_Bug_Reports While opensuse@opensuse.org is for "Generic questions and User to User support for the openSUSE distribution" and is not the primarily interface to drop bug reports. See http://lists.opensuse.org/ Have a lot of fun with Ubuntu! Lars -- Lars Müller [ˈlaː(r)z ˈmʏlɐ] Samba Team SUSE Linux, Maxfeldstraße 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany

I've used it successfully before too. That doesn't mean it's problem-free.

If you'd said that you thought it was a bug when I originally asked the question I'd have reported it. But now the partition is otherwise occupied. Incidentally that wiki page starts out by saying it's not for me. It says it is for testers of development releases - you might want to reword that. Yes as it was not my intention to express: I never had any trouble with it therefore it must be perfect. What we need is a bug report and in the case of an installer fail we need the YaST logs. This is all explained in detail at a dedicated YaST bug reporting page. See http://en.opensuse.org/Bugs/YaST For a developer it is quite simple: No bug report and no log files? Then there is no issue. In addition not all developers are following this list. I'm sorry for not having expressed this clear enough with my first reply.

It's a wiki. No bug reports required. Just fix it. Your participation is welcome! Lars -- Lars Müller [ˈlaː(r)z ˈmʏlɐ] Samba Team SUSE Linux, Maxfeldstraße 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany
