I've recently installed SuSE 9.3 on my ThinkPad. And for the fourth time, KWifimanager doesn't work (it also didn't work in 9.0, 9.1 & 9.2). This time, when starting it, I get the error message "KCrash: Application 'kwifimanager' crashing... *** glibc detected *** malloc(): memory corruption (fast): 0x0819cde1 *** Unable to start Dr. Konqi" Also, the Wifi config panel in the Control Center, which uses the same config screen as kwifimanager can now save, but has absolutely no effect on the wifi configuration. It apparently saves the info to /root/.kde/share/config/kcmwifirc, but the wifi config is stored in /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-wlan-id-00\:20\:e0\:8a\:a6\:ce. There appears to be no mechanism to effect the changes. Is there any way to get this to work as intended? Why, after all this time and at least four versions, can't KDE & SuSE make something that works???
Don't use the KwifiManager. Use the SuSE netapplet. I've been using it (with 9.3) on my Compaq Presario 2800T at home and at school with NO problems. Works great.

One thing that appears to be missing, it the ability to switch an ethernet adapter from static to dhcp addresses. Currently, I use profiles to switch between static, dhcp and wifi. Also, when switching wifi, does it change only the essid or the complete settings, including WEP keys etc. For example, I currently have two wifi configurations, one for home and one for another location. I have saved the two configurations and when I want to switch, copy the appropriate file over ifcfg-wlan. Will netapplet do similar?

Let me describe it to you like this (I lack the sophistication to do any better): After I installed 9.3 on my laptop, I simply fired it up and started netapplet. I didn't do ANYTHING with YaST or anything else. When I started netapplet (at home), it simply detected all of the networks it could pick up and then activated the link with my home router (I imagine that's because of the best signal and the only one that would allow it). Then, I took my laptop to school (law school) which is completely set up for wireless. Netapplet connected to the nearest wireless node without problem and, for the first time, I was able to use the network at school without a cat V cable. So, the only thing I can think of, is that the profiles you set up are no longer needed and are interfering with the functionality of netapplet. I have just one profile and it seems to work anywhere I'm allowed to connect. Sorry I can't be more help than that. Jack

Located where in the menu structure?

Thanks found it on the laptop. (I had a few packages that didn't install do to bad media, and wanted to make sure I had what you were referring to.

Do you by chance have netapplet installed, it is supposed to interface with kwifimanager. Yes it is installed. And, if I read that link correctly, someone else is complaining that Kwifimanager should use it, but doesn't. Again, SuSE & KDE have provided a potentially useful tool, that I've yet to see work, through four SuSE versions. You'd think that after I and others had filed a report on this problem, they might take a hint and fix the damn thing. There is no excuse for such shoddy work. Either fix it or remove it.

I guess you didn't see my response. It DOES work. Works great, in fact. I don't know why it doesn't seem to be working on your laptop, but, from what I can tell, it's pretty functional as is. Not a SuSE problem, I think. Maybe it's your computer? I don't know how to do detailed system code trouble-shooting. I would just re-install 9.3 and double check that all the packages I want are installed. For instance, if you haven't already, try installing the entire set of Mobile Computing packages.

I've already installed everything listed that might affect this. I've got a ThinkPad and even the configure-thinkpad package was installed. However, I doubt it's hardware as SuSE has no problem working with it and never has. As I mentioned in the other note, the Control Center saves the config in a file that's nowhere near where the interface config is located. It's SuSE that determines where the ifcfg-wlan file is located, not the hardware manufacturer.

One other setting you may want to check is the "user" checkbox in the interface config. This allows users to make changes to the network config. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998 "The day Microsoft makes something that doesn't suck is probably the day they start making vacuum cleaners." -Ernst Jan Plugge

It is enabled. However, the root password is required to do the configuration and the data is stored under /root, not /etc/sysconfig/network. Also, that "user" option, is used to allow a user to start & stop an interface, not configure it.

That's nice.....can't find it on the 9.3 DVD nor update. Fred -- "BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU!" Brought to you by the US Department of Homeland Security and the Patriot Act(s) numerous Presidential Directives, etc.
