[opensuse] help with ATI Radeon 5470
hello everyone, i have there 3 ati machines: one with mobility radeon 3200, another with mobility radeon 4200, but the new one has mobility radeon 5470 and i am unable to configure it as i've made with the others: just click on http://opensuse-community.org/ati.ymp and the it adds the correct mirrors. but not on this new machine, if i do that i'll lost X forever, will have to use failsafe and then remove/purge the package and the mirror. If i try the proprietary driver directly from the ati site things gets even worse. i want to use all features from this video card, any help is welcome. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Leonardo, For ATI you *will* want to use the driver from the ATI site. You cannot beat it for features, downclocking (running cooler), and performance, performance, and performance. Downloading and installing from the ATI sight isn't bad. Get the file from ATI, (and the instructions), then drop to runlevel 3 to install the driver .. as root # telinit 3 Then following the driver instructions for the install. Then: # telinit 5 And see how it goes. If you haven't already gotten a skeletal xorg.conf file for your card, you may want to get one or just run 'makexconfig' (sp?) to generate a default. That way if there are any issues with the modular xorg setup /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/stuff, you at least have a good idea of the "stuff" to mess with :) Your alternatives are to use the radeon or radeonhd drivers, which are not bad, but they give only 50% of the performance you get wit the proprietary driver. -- David C. Hello and thanks for the answer. I'm actually holding myself with the open source driver because sadly when i install ATI driver i lose X. It's a problem specific to 5000 series, some internet forums suggests that i do some objdump in the binary and remove my card from the unsupported list. I haven't tried it yet. Anyone able to use ATI driver in 5470 card or at least the same family and opensuse 11.4? 2011/3/29 David C. Rankin <drankinatty@suddenlinkmail.com>:

Hello everyone, this afternoon i've tried the new ATI installer, the 11.4 version (what a coincidence!). it now lists opensuse 11.4 as a supported version, and generated just one package; but it worked just perfectly, my laptop now does ~700 fps on glxgears even with compiz activated! 2011/4/20 Leonardo <sombriks@gmail.com>:
