I overreacted re. my disappointment over 5.3 and I apologize for making public posts concerning my frustration before I had investigated the problem fully. This is what I have been able to determine with a fair amount of certainty so far: 1. Sound is partially broken in 5.3, but if you use OSS (I have tried both 3.9x and 3.7x with complete success on an AWE32 pnp) you should be ok. If you uncomment sound in /etc/conf.modules you can use a modular kernel-based sound driver _BUT_ anything that uses /dev/dsp appears to be broken (no midi at all, most games use /dev/dsp so no games for the most part). mp3 and cd players all seem to work fine. 2. Using isapnp to initialize your joystick port may indeed provide functioning joystick support while using OSS for sound. I have determined that version1.2.9 of the linux kernel joystick driver is what was breaking my joystick, I have resumed using version1.2.7 and it works fine now(I can't test this in 5.3 because I do not have 5.3 installed). So, I probably could end up with a functional 5.3 install now that I know what I do. Frankly, if my system is broke, I should be the one to break it. I blew my cool because 5.3 appeared to be broken out of the box. Well, it wasn't completely 5.3's fault, but 5.3 does have issues regarding sound, your mileage may vary. I trust S.u.S.E. will be able to figure out what is breaking kernel sound in 5.3 and let us know when there is a fix. I apologize to Lenz, Hubert, Bodo, and all of the list subscribers for my reaction on the list. I should have been more patient and waited to post. Hopefully you all realize that being human we all do things that we would have handled differently given the passage of time. -- .###. /#######\## -==============================================- ;##### ;# Mike's WindowMaker ;##### ;# <A HREF="http://tasteslikechicken.ml.org/windowmaker.html"><A HREF="http://tasteslikechicken.ml.org/windowmaker.html</A">http://tasteslikechicken.ml.org/windowmaker.html</A</A>> \# /## -==============================================- ###'---'#### - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

So that would mean no sound in Quake, and no desktop sounds either...(esound...etc) If this is true that is very much broken, and would suck as I am rather fond of playing linux Quake and it's just not the same with no audio. Does anyone know anymore about this? It seems to me that 5.3 would have _had_ to have undergone pretesting and I am wondering how such a problem as a broken /dev/dsp could go by unnoticed. There would have been tons of complaints. For those of you with 5.3 (still waiting) can you endorse that /dev/dsp is broken? You can always run OSS, it works fine. Unless you use a joystick/gamepad, then, like I said, perhaps isapnp could be used to initialize it. I'm not reinstalling 5.3 anytime soon, I just spent the last two days installing and uninstalling os'es, now that I have 5.2 reconfigured to my satisfaction it's staying for awhile. (Ps. an unidentified source at S.u.S.E. USA that I spoke to today said the consensus at the US office was that 5.3 was not quite ready for release, so it's not just me and Fred who are having problems) -- .###.

No......I have desktop sounds aplenty here...using the commercial OSS driver.

Sorry, I don't have Quake, so I can't tell you if there's sound with it or not.

That's strange. I tried Quake, which I'm sure uses /dev/dsp. Sound from the start. Creepy :-)
No, not creepy. I had sound in Quake too. I did not have sound in xmame, which does use /dev/dsp. Sorry about the mistake. It's the sound in Quake that's creepy :-) But try this: cd /dev mv dsp xxx (run quake) mv xxx dsp Tell me if your quake works without a /dev/dsp. Mine doesn't. - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

I think the script fixperms.sh fixes that, not sure I've never had a problem. alexm wrote:

well, this confirms that you are using svgalib quake, and that it is a problem with console control instead of sound... I guess you can disregard my previous post :) if you would like to run it as a normal user, you can just set it suid root and it will work fine... - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

Have you tried it as root or a regular user? just wondering... On my machine quake segfaults if run as a normal user even though everybody can write to /dev/dsp. alexm - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
if you are using svgalib quake its more than likely a problem with having control over the console (alot of svgalib apps are like this), instead of it being somethign to do with the audio, if svgalib quake encounteres a problem with audio on startup, it simply disables audio output..
