What type of games are we talking about? Anything that requires heavy 3D accelleration is probably out for virtualization. All? That is a long list! As others have mentioned there are gaming solutions in Linux... one is the huge pile of Linux native games - there are some excellent ones that do not get much attention in the media. Another solution is to use Cedega from Transgaming. It doesn't support all games, but it does a reasonably good stab at it. World of Warcraft for example works quite well (although not perfectly) in Cedega (and the upcoming Beta of 6.1 should see at least some improvements in handling WoW). The very latest releases such as Age of Conan do not yet work, but people are working on it since there is a huge demand for them to work. Wine is also an option (Cedega is a "version" or modification of Wine) but it tends to be more fiddly to get working... ie you have to read a bit beforehand.
Anything that requires heavy 3D accelleration is probably out for virtualization.
Not sure.
If they are the latest games, then they will not work in the current releases of VirtualBox or VMWare. They require video cards far beyond what the virtual card in either VM app can currently provide. That said, there is progress being made towards getting it all working, but... I wouldn't hold my breath and wait on it. it will take time for anything usable to hit the marketplace. Dual boot is also an option, although, from personal experience... if you default to Windows, Linux will never be booted. It will just take up space on the hard drives. There are loads of gaming options... Linux is not all command line and word processors... so don't give up. I am an avid gamer. I use only Linux... and I get along just fine with feeding my daily gaming fix :-) C. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hey that's cool - I've been a full time linux user for quite a while myself, and also play games. Heck, I've purchased a lot of 3D FPS titles - the doom series, the quake series, RtCW, ut2000/2004, and others of the genre. I've stayed with native linux games though, not wanting to toss my hard earned cash to firms that won't support my chosen OS platform, but I am curious how well the various wintendo emulation solutions are working these days. What is the quality of game play in games under wine? ISTR an annoying lag between mouse/keyboard events and the corresponding reaction on the screen with the programs I've run under wine a few years ago - that would be rather irritating in game play. Do you detect a big difference between native linux games and wintendo games under wine/cedega? There's also the games being ported over by Linux Game Publishing... X3 will probably be out soon... OK, it's an older game, but still a nice one if you like space-sim type stuff. That reminds me... Neverwinter Nights (the first one) runs native in Linux....

It depends on the game. The more recent the game, the less likely it is to work well or at all. World of Warcraft is one of the big ones. It works reasonably well under both Wine and Cedega (I know Cedega only, and don't use Wine for gaming). It is good enough in Cedega for me that I play it 100% there (kinda have to since I don't have Windows at all anymore). Other games that work - at least for me... Oblivion, Civ4, GTA San Andreas. Medal of Honor Allied Assault (and the Spearhead expansion pack), F.E.A.R., Far Cry, etc. Work is a subjective term of course (some people have probs depending on hardware and local config).... - WoW plays almost like native... there are currently a few graphical issues (since patch 2.4 time frame) that are being worked on, and it can crash in Battlegrounds (not often but does happen) - Oblivion works well if you do all the tweaks described - same with F.E.A.R and Far Cry (I play both fairly regularly) - MOH plays like it's native - GTA has issues. I've managed to get the game working except that some of the textures for the people are missing so you get a grey person shaped blob instead of a defined game character. - Civ4 works fine As for the annoying lag in keypress to action... I don't have any issues with it... for example WoW is as responsive to the keyboard as native, and I can participate in Battlegrounds, Instances etc with no fears of being singled out because I'm playing in Linux. There is a Cedega Wiki here: http://cedegawiki.sweetleafstudios.com/wiki/Main_Page which details a lot of the tweaks needed to get various games up and running. eg follow the instructions for F.E.A.R. and it'll work fine. Overall... things work well enough for me in Cedega/Wine that i have no need or desire to set up a Windows partition for gaming. Duaine, What I would do in your situation would be to remain with Windows as the primary system serving as the host os for virtualization, you can then install SuSE 10.3 as a guest OS. This is certainly not the way Linux people prefer, but assuming you are not going to buy a new computer and dual booting is not an option, this will work, and your teenager can play his games with Windows as a native OS. Personally, I prefer Linux as the host os because it has a more robust file system and does not blue screen. Virtualbox and VMWare should work well in either situation. -- -- Jerry Feldman <gaf@blu.org> Boston Linux and Unix PGP key id: 537C5846 PGP Key fingerprint: 3D1B 8377 A3C0 A5F2 ECBB CA3B 4607 4319 537C 5846

I don't know if I should be offended by that or not... If pressing the down arrow and enter key is to much for him then set your bootloader to boot windows by default. Then he will just have to wait the couple of seconds longer before he can play his games. Virtualizing Linux under Windows isn't to bad if you don't need 3d for Linux. -- "We must plan for freedom, and not only for security, if for no other reason than only freedom can make security more secure." Well, if it's too much trouble to reboot then he can't want to play the game that much. Dual boot, make Windows the default and if he doesn't like it, tough. For Windows games I've used WINE, Crossover Linux, or Cedega. Which one I use depends on the game unfortunately, Luckily, I only have to worry about getting my old RTS games working. Then dual boot or use Linux in a VM. Otherwise, it seems that you're describing the solution you want - real Windows, real Linux, no dual boot = virtualization....if the virtualization can handle the requirements for the games. IME, you end up with a virtualized video adapter and they typically can't. So that means either dual boot or virtualize Linux. Dual boot is not so much of a hassle, though - it wouldn't hurt him to actually learn to deal with it. Well, you've kinda painted a scenario that has no option because the best options you've removed from the table. "I want to teach my kid to learn to drive a car, but I don't want a car, and he's not willing to learn in a driving school car". Um, OK, so how exactly do you propose solving this problem? Hi, playonlinux installs most windows games that don't have linux versions and they work as well as they do on windows. It has one small bug though, a lot of it's messages are in french still. Geez, don't just give up like that. Tell him to learn how to reboot or forget about the games. He shouldn't be dictating to you how to set up the computer. As I mentioned in another note, set up the boot loader to default to Windows, which will cause it to boot into Windows, after a few second pause. I am a big gaming fan. Got a dual boot setup and it is great. Works fine. Dual boot does not affect the windows operating system at all. It just modifies the Boot-loader which is a piece of software that has nothing to with windows really. It just loads windows or Linux or BSD or OSX or BeOS or .... So having a dual boot system means you still have REAL windows. You can do REAL Linux too. Maybe he is under the impression that dual boot modifies your windows so it is winlux? By the way Ps3 runs linux for the networking system. Teenagers are the perfect form of birth control.... good luck.
