It was the smbpasswd -a username bit. Thanks for the reply though! I re-ead the how-to and didn't see it mentioned at all. Am I blind? Thanks again!!! OK, trying to tackle Samba tonite.
Here is what (I think) matters...
(excerpt from smb.conf)
encrypt passwords = yes smb passwd file = /etc/smbpasswd
[web] comment = Web path = /usr/local/httpd public = yes writable = yes printable = no
I am trying to connect to this share from a Windows98 machine using the following command:
Net use y: \\10.1.1.2\web
If you are using "security = user", try \\10.1.1.2\username . Also, did you "smbpasswd -a username"? What does /var/log/messages say about the connection attempt? You might want to go over to www.ora.com and take a gander at the open-source version of their Samba book. If this doesn't work, you might send me a copy of smb.conf. I've got the exact same setup on my web server. Hello All. I know this topic is a bit off topic but I need some help. I am relatively new to the Linux OS, and so far I love what I see. I especially like the openness of the developers in this community and I am excited to be a part of something big. :) With the recent release of several new Office Applications, Linux is now becoming a real choice for the desktop. In my office however we cannot switch to Linux mainly because of the serious lack of CAD software. Nothing in the Linux arena can even compete with AutoCAD. :( For the over year now I have been involved in a new technology called IntelliCAD. IntelliCAD is an AutoCAD clone that has unrivaled compatibility with AutoCAD like nothing else on the market. It is an amazing technology, but it is for windows. :( Good news however, the IntelliCAD source code was opened up last year under what has been called the IntelliCAD Technology Consortium (referred to as the ITC) , and the results have been amazing. Under a special license agreement any user can become a member and download the source code for free. The limitation is that only commercial members, those who pay $5,000 a year, can distribute the binaries. But I believe in IntelliCAD and believe that it can be ported to Linux and be done so in a fair amount of time. The GUI would need to be rewritten in either QT or Gtk and the back-end is pretty much vanilla C++. I am writing because I am looking for volunteer C++ developers who would be willing to help out on this project. Anyone who has some good knowledge on any of these areas (CAD, GUI, Linux, etc.) can be of value. At the moment a discussion is taking place at the ITC forum as to the toolkit that should be used for the GUI and for a place to host the cvs server. I myself do not work for the ITC and am just a volunteer who has decided to advocate the Linux port. I am new to C++ but I want to learn it better just so I can be actively involved in this new port. If you are interested you can go to http://webboard.jel.net/~intellicad? , login and join the discussion. Even if you cannot help with the programming end of things maybe you have some valuable information that can help us in these defining moments as we make decisions on how to do the port to Linux. You can become a member of the ITC for free and download the source code at http://www.intellicad.org . Thank you for taking the time to read this. Have you looked at QCAD? It is excellent! JLK On Sun, 22 Oct 2000, you wrote:
