Hi there, Let's say I want to create additional partitions as subdirectories. For example '/opt' Are these the correct steps I need to take? Create new partition and set mount point /opt restart umount /opt tar czvf opt.tgz opt mv opt opt.orig mkdir opt mount /opt tar xzvf opt.tgz Another question: I remember someone mentioning something tricky about using Partition Magic. What's the deal with that? Thanks, -- Yatsen Ng yatsen.ng@brunel.nl Den Haag, The Netherlands It said "Needs Windows 95 or better". Don't use tar to do that... There is a simple trick to achieve what you want to do, assuming that your new partition is ready and can be used:
mv /opt /opt_old mkdir /opt mount -t ext2 /dev/hd** /opt cp -dpR /opt_old/* /opt/. rm -rf /opt_old
Did you know that cp -a <whatever> is equivalent to cp -dpR <whatever>? Paul Abrahams -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

What I've done with success: create partiton/format and add entry into /etc/fstab mv /opt /opt_orig mkdir /opt mount -t ext2 /dev/hdxy /opt cp -a /opt_orig/* /opt/. rm -rf /opt_orig I've never had a problem with the -a option on cp. Terry Eck Yatsen Ng wrote:

It's my intention to create a /boot partition and install LILO in the boot section of the /bot partition. So far I haven't had much success. I realize that things tend to get trickier when messing around with the boot partition. How should I tackle this problem? On Wed, 23 Feb 2000, you wrote:

What is the problem you are facing? Could you be more elaborate? Nadeem Yatsen Ng wrote:

If you were able to follow the idea of making the /opt partition making the /boot is similar. This might be difficult on an existing system unless you have a way of carving out a couple of meg within the first 1024cyls on the drive. If you do have a few cylinders below 1024 free, follow the same formula used for making /opt a partition. Once /boot is mounted as a single partition you will have to edit /etc/lilo.config and rerun /sbin/lilo. Please expand on what problems you are having. Yatsen Ng wrote:
