[opensuse] I there a way to view my DVD-RW capabilities under Linux (like Nero InfoTool) ? ?
hi all ! Windows has a tool called Nero InfoTool. This app provides me with full information about my DVD drive. I would like to know: Which writing modes are supported (track-at-one/disk-at-one/multisession/...), which speed DVD+R can be recorded, which speed DVD-R can be recorded, which speed DVD+-RW and DVD+-R DL can be recorded ... and if Lightscribe is supported. Is there any way to get/retrieve my DVD drive capabilities under Linux ? -Alexey -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

If you are more into GUI Apps.. k3b e.g. can also show them .. choose the "Settings" menu, "Configure K3b.." and select the "Devices" object in the new dialog appearing. Have fun, Frank
Thanks Frank. What are the main differences between wodim and cdrecord ? btw: the command wodim -prcap dev=/dev/cdrom Does not show DVD+R capabilities, only DVD-R. -Alexey -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

What are the main differences between wodim and cdrecord ? wodim belongs to the cdrkit fork of the cdrtools. See http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2006/09/msg00002.html for more information.

Does not show DVD+R capabilities, only DVD-R. Ah, yes, sorry.. for DVD+R capabilities on commandline i currently only know the output of "hwinfo --cdrom" (line ^ Features:) or to look in lshal (e.g. with "lshal | grep dvdplus").
Have fun, Frank

So, is hwinfo or lshal lying on my system (or both), or is Plextor lying ? Hmmm.... in your case I would try few several methods, including the Windows Nero InfoTool, K3B, wodim, whatever... -Alexey -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Not that easily, to what i know. You can use the (GUI) tools at http://www.lightscribe.com to check whether your drive supports it. Or for commandline .. as there also is a SDK with a documented API a simple tool for this could look like the one i just yet wrote and attached (be warned, i have no such drive and so this not tested at all .. just some codepeace of crap that _could_ work .. at your own risk of course ;-). But you'll still need the SDK and system libs installed (from lightscribe.com) for this to work/compile. If this works for you.. and there are more interested in a commandline tool like this (that also may get extended a bit to check for capabilites like color or monochrome printing etc.) i might build a rpm in the openSUSE buildservice from it.. so, any feedback is appreciated (as always ;-) Have fun, Frank P.S.: Please no flames for the codequality.. i know its crappy. I haven't written C++ for ages (at least it feels like that).

If i was to guess, i'd say you're using an "old" openSUSE version (prior to 10.2 or even 10.1) where hal didn't have Danny Kukawkas great fix for right capabilities detection of DVD-RW and also DVD+RW DL.

To me this really looks like a old hal version that doesn't detect this right. Have fun, Frank

You are right on target. I'm still running 10.0.

rpm -q hwinfo hal hwinfo-11.25-2 hal-0.5.4-6.4 Yes, then this will mostprobably be fixed also for your drive (besides a lot of other things) when you update/install 10.2.
If you're familiar with compiling and building rpms you could of course also try to patch your hal with the patch from Danny (http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/hal/2006-May/005151.html) for this problem. Have fun, Frank

That would be an 'if' not a 'when' ;-) I'm quite happy with 10.0, never caused me much trouble. I don't mind skipping a few releases, as long as I can keep my desktop applications somewhat up to date through packman/suser repos. I think the next for me will be 10.3.

Sure, if it bothered me enough ;-)
