Printer drivers for Xerox Able 3321 - availability.
I'm looking for Linux printer drivevrs for a Xerox Able 3321, and I've had no luck at the Xerox site. Does anyone know if this driver is available anywhere? Thanks Kris

Two questions immediately spring to mind: 1) Does it emulate another printer for which you can find a driver? For example, my Brother HL-1040 emulates an HP Laserjet 2p and for the longest time I used an HP2P driver. 2) Is it a WinPrinter? (Also called GDI). If that's the case, you're probably out of luck. I had a wonderful Xerox printer a couple of years ago (an 8P or something like that) but it was a WinPrinter of all things. I had to sell it because it didn't work under Linux at all except through some extreme conniptions that involved Samba, Ghostscript on Windows and a script. I bought the Brother instead. Don

Thanks Don, I'll be picking up the doco for the printer (it's actually a humungous beasty that does photocopying/faxing & printing) on monday. Hopefully I'll have a bit more insight then :).

I did see a reference to smb on Xerox' ftp site. Gosh I hope not! I'm having difficulty trying to get smb to work with a w2k machine. Of course, being a neophyte doesn't help. Kris

Hmmm - at one of my sites we have a beastie like that, but it's a Canon and it works just fine with Linux since it has a network card built in. We had to use a generic Laser driver (I think it was a HP LJ 4) but it works with the two Linux boxes we have at that site, so you *may* be in luck. Samba's not that big a deal to set up. I strongly recommend using Webmin (www.webmin.com) to setup Samba on your Linux box. It's far and away the easiest way I've seen to set up Samba. (I've been using Samba since it's 1.x days and know more about the smb.conf file than I ever wanted to know! But every since I discovered Webmin, I use it instead). Post back to the list after you look at the docs - assuming it's not a WinPrinter, you can probably get it going. Don
