[opensuse] Re: Qt YaST: new interface?

Greetings,
I must have had my old style YaST open and not realised that I pulled in an update somewhere/somehow. To cut a long story short, here is a link to a screenshot showing my new shiny (but unwanted) YaST interface that gave me a bit of a surprise this morning.
looks like the gtk interface, are you sure you use the qt one? jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://valerie.dodin.org http://news.opensuse.org/2009/04/13/people-of-opensuse-jean-daniel-dodin/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

At first I was not sure, but after investigation it seems it's the YaST2 interface based on Qt4. I was advised that this was pulled in with an update to KDE 4.3 from the 11.1 factory desktop repo. I don't necessarily dislike it, I just have some issues with the colour scheme and the jumping of the right hand pane. These are signified by bugs #525288 and #532555 Cheers the noo, Graham -- “Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes.” ☘ Oscar Wilde -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Yes, it does look like the GTK interface.. :-( and it's planned/part of 11.2. It's in the screenshots for the 11.2 release. http://en.opensuse.org/Image:OS11.2M4-yast2-control-center-qt.png C. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

In my opinion, the screen shot resembles more of the ncurses version of YaST (haven't tried it first hand). The only difference is the modules listed for each section are separate icons and not a single list. The GTK version looks more like Gnome's Control Center. I happen to like the new look and it finally looks like it fits KDE4, minus the mentioned bugs. I think the developers should strive for a consistent look and feel for YaST regardless if you're running Gnome, KDE or no X at all. I think Gnome's version is more of a departure, especially the "Software Management" module. Just my opinion. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Agreed. This is an issue I raised on the Factory list... back in 11.0 time frame. Some of the departure of Gnome YaST vs QT was a bit of a pain for me and trying to do phone support. Anything to make them the same regardless of DE is a good thing (this was in my original reply, but I deleted it for some reason). I've just been poking around in it to remove the close button from the dockwidget. The code is mostly KDE's systemsettings ("Configure Desktop" in the menu) , minus the KDE code and with icons beside rather than icons beneath. Run them side by side and you'll see the category header is the same. I hope in the near future it will be possible again to have YaST functionality accessible in systemsettings itself. To all parents on this thread. Thanks for the feedback on the issue, I believe the issue belongs in the factory list. Please either follow the factory list or follow the bug reports previously mentioned.
