Hi, Anyone remembering a few months ago some SuSE statements saying they would give support for the 2.4.0 kernel to people who bought SuSE 7.0 ?? I read it on this list! TIA Filip
This would have to have been LenZ or myself ..and no this won't happen. For what it's worth...2.4 is still a .0 release and it is not the default on 7.1 .. 2.2.18 is. I am not sure how support will handle this...keep your eyes peeled and when I hear how it will be handled I will let all of you know. * filip (vhf@skynet.be) [010126 13:31]: =>Hi, => =>Anyone remembering a few months ago some SuSE statements saying they would =>give support for the 2.4.0 kernel to people who bought SuSE 7.0 ?? =>I read it on this list! => =>TIA =>Filip => => =>-- =>To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com =>For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com =>Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq => -- Ben Rosenberg mailto:brosenb@suse.com --------------------------------------- SuSE Inc. 580 Second St Suite 210 Oakland CA 94607 U.S.A Tel: 1-510-628-3380 EXT:5086 Fax: 1-510-628-3381 --------------------------------------- "There are no problems, only solutions."
Hi Ben, Well, that's very honest. I 'm deducting from your writings that there are still some problems with 2.4.0 and that it is still in transition mode ( I suppose netfilter and usb and agp ). As for me I'll forget that support and I hope that SuSE 7.1 will give then step by step good support in converting 2.2.18 into 2.4.0. Bye, Filip. Le Vendredi 26 Janvier 2001 22:45, vous avez crit :

Filip, Yes, I saw a few problems with 2.4 and I found out today that the VIA IDE driver had some issues that 2.4.1 pre10 (which was released today) fixed. I think this would part of the issues of lock up that I saw came from. It may have been some other braindead thing I did, so give it a try if you wish. You can install both kernels .. 7.1 has a cool boot feature so you can choose between them. I still don't know how support will deal with some of the calls...haven't talk to anyone since Friday really. BTW...3D acceleration w/ my Viper 770 worked out of the gate with 2.4 and it works really GREAT w/ 2.2.18...my usb visor synch works well..and I have been reading up on netfilter for sometime...I am not a guru, but I guess I get the job done. You all will enjoy this release I believe. I was impressed from a " I'm geek " stand point...not an employee stand point :) Regards, * filip (vhf@skynet.be) [010128 15:09]: =>Hi Ben, => =>Well, that's very honest. Here is the latest from Linus himself: I just uploaded it to kernel.org, and I expect that I'll do the final 2.4.1 tomorrow, before leaving for NY and LinuxWorld. Please test that the pre-kernel works for you.. The main noticeable things in pre11 are fixing some bugs that crept in after 2.4.0 - the block device queuing improvements could lose wakeups under extreme load by multiple clients, and the vmscanning "get rid of special return codes for shared memory" thing had missed a bit. This should also fix the VIA IDE driver issues (if you want safe, do NOT enable auto-dma), and the reported problems with hpt366 controllers and IBM drives. Hopefully these were the last major IDE issues for a while. Also, can people who have had unhappy relationships with their eepro100 please try to cuddle and make up again? The eepro100 changes should fix the problem of having posted writes that basically made some of the timing not work out. Linus ----- pre11: - Trond Myklebust: NFS/RPC client SMP fixes - rth: alpha pyxis and cabriolet fixes - remove broken sys_wait4() declarations - disable radeon debugging code - VIA IDE driver should not enable autodma unless asked for - Andrey Savochkin: eepro100 update. Should fix the resource timing problems. - Jeff Garzik: via82cxxx_audio update - YMF7xx PCI audio update: get rid of old broken driver, make new driver handle legacy control too. - fix missed wakeup on block device request list - hpt366 controller doesn't play nice with some IBM harddisks - remove inode pages from the page cache only after having removed them from the page tables. - shared memory out-of-swap writepage() fixup (no more magic return) Looks as though 2.4.1 will be released soon....Maybe Matt On Sunday 28 January 2001 09:06 pm, Ben Rosenberg wrote:
