This may be a stupid question, On the other question, How can it be a stupid question if I don't ask it! I would like to understand more about the boot process of SLES 9 or is this in the case of 2.6 kernel? I have looked at "/usr/share/doc/manual/sles-admin_en/administration.pdf" already 1) looking at the initrd.img file, I don't understand why there are so many routines just to find root-dev. Do I need to find real-root-dev if my FS is in RAM, besides /usr or what should I set that to? 2) If I store /var/log dir over NFS, do I have to mount /var/log prior to /etc/init.d/boot starts? 3) What process/services must I start before mounting NFS area besides a. System having the IP up b. Default route set c. /sbin/portmap running 4) Do I need to run things like hotplug, coldplug, resmgr, nfs, nfsboot, fbset, hwscan,.... In the initrd, there is a linuxrc file, do I need to set "/proc/sys/kernel/real-root-dev" if my initrd is in RAM. Also, once linuxrc finish running, how does it know to run /etc/inittab next? There is no pivot_root and chroot/switchroot. What is ran between the initrd and inittab and /etc/init.d/boot? Thanks for any help any one can provide! Steven
