I know there's been a lot of discussion of the problem with getting the KDE help search to work. I still haven't succeeded at that with the 2.2beta1 version. Here's what I did: 1. I made sure that the files htdig, htsearch, and htmerge existed and were executable, and that their locations were entered in the three slots on the Index page. 2. I clicked on Generate Index on the Index page. It went through the Scanning for Files phase and the Extracting Search Terms phase, but gave no indication that it was going through the Generating Index phase (after the second phase, with the bar at 100% for several seconds, it just quit). After going through that, I still got no search matches either for Konqueror or kdm. I don't know what extra step I'm missing. The KDEHELP manual, accessed via the help button on the help screen, provides no guidance. I also saw nothing on how to index info pages or man pages. There are check boxes for them on the index page but those check boxes are greyed out. Paul

Put these in htdig, htsearch & htmerge, in the splash that comes up from pressing "update" /opt/kde2/bin/htdig /opt/kde2/bin/htsearch /opt/kde2/bin/htmerge -- Cheers, Jonathan

/opt/kde2/bin/htdig /opt/kde2/bin/htsearch /opt/kde2/bin/htmerge
That's exactly what I had in that screen (the Index screen). It seems to be necessary but not sufficient. Paul

You also need to create sym links to these binaries in /opt/www/cgi-bin/ and /opt/www/htdig/bin/. M On Saturday 04 August 2001 2:51 pm, Paul Abrahams wrote:

The binaries for htdig, htsearch, and htmerge indeed exist and are referenced correctly from the index page. But now I've gotten another clue: The directory where the databases are stored (/opt/www/htdig/db) is writable only by root. I could, of course, go in and change the permissions manually, but that seems dangerous. I seem to remember that in an older version of KDE, root had to prepare the index; an ordinary user couldn't do it. But there was a way to get that to happen from an ordinary login if you had the root password. Now (in 2.2beta1) I can't find anything like that. Paul
