James, would it be possible to include pybliographer into ULB as well. It's a very handy reference manager and it seems not to work under 9.1. Cheers, Ulrich

I assume from the py at the beginning of the name that it's a Python based app? I'll certainly look at it, although I do have a TODO list already, which includes the Python bindings that it'll need. -- James Ogley, Webmaster, Rubber Turnip james@rubberturnip.org.uk http://www.rubberturnip.org.uk Jabber: riggwelter@myjabber.net Using Free Software since 1994, running GNU/Linux (SuSE 9.0) GNOME updates for SuSE: http://www.usr-local-bin.org

Yes it is. It integrates with Lyx and Kile (both latex editors) and it supports the most important reference fromats: BibTeX, ISI, Medline, Ovid, Refer. The web page is http://pybliographer.org/

Actually, pybliographer-1.2.2-70.i586.rpm is on the DVD. Actually, pybliographer-1.2.2-70.i586.rpm is on the DVD. SUSE has provided it for a long time. Yes, but it does not start. Is has maybe some dependency issues? It happened before in various SuSE versions. In 9.0 the old version (1.0.11) was working fine. But in 9.1 version 1.2.2 does not work. Especially pybliographic, the interface for pybliographer.

I checked it out, and there's a dependency on python-bibtex that's not stated in the pybliographer spec. I've checked that python-bibtex is neither on the 5 CDs nor on the DVD but it is on ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/9.1/suse/i586/python-bibtex-1.1.93.1-96.i586.rpm It would be nice if fixes like this one were published somewhere (sdb, ...) -- A.M.

I've checked it once more: it's on the 32 bit side of the DVD but not on the 64 bit one. I've installed the DVD version on a dual Opteron machine and python-bibtex is missing there. -- A.M.

What's a "pybliographer"? The closest my dictionary shows is "pyelography", which I suspect you didn't mean. ;-)

See the Description section of the rpm, for instance $ rpm -qi pybliographer ... Description : Pybliographer is a tool for managing bibliographic databases. It currently supports the following formats: * BibTeX (quite complete) * Medline (read-only) * Ovid files (from ovid.com) * Refer and EndNote (read only) * SGML DocBook (write only) Pybliographer can be used for searching, editing, reformatting, etc. In fact, it's a simple framework that provides easy to use python classes and functions, and therefore can be extended to any usage (generating HTML pages according to bibliographic searches, etc). In addition to the scripting environment, a graphical GNOME interface is available. It provides powerful editing capabilities, in addition to a nice hierarchical search mechanism. ... Pybliographer is especially useful to people who read and write scientific articles. See also http://www.pybliographer.org/ -- A.M.

I have a related question. You know that for music CDs it is possible to query a server and get the information for almost any CD. Is there any thing similar for books? I would like to create my personal database of books and articles (with Pybliographic, probably), but when I think of the long hours I would need to type them all, I kind of find excuses faster that I write this email O:-) -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

Well, for books, you could use the ISBN to look up the title at <http://isbntools.com>. Also, my local library has dial in access, where you can search for books. It also has ISBN lookup, where you can enter an ISBN and get back all the info for that book. It might be possible to automate that process with a script. There are probably on line indexes of various publications. You might want to talk to a librarian, to see what they use.

Ah, I'll have a look there, thanks. It's a good starting point.

A paper card index :-p No, no, they have a computerised index. I don't remember what kind of software they have, but I'm almost sure that they don't have it on line. And any way, it would be limited to what they have on that library (and I have books they don't, more than one). Not even using the terminal on the library can I see if what I search for is available at any other library on the country, nor do they have inter library loans. We are not so advanced :-( - yet, I hope. So I was thinking of a general index; the ISBN should be perfect, if it is available for me. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
