Hi, Anyone know what the /etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/XServers file should look like to get the graphical login on the client? I had this working under SuSE 7.1 :-), but unfortunately KDE files weren't under the /etc structure and didn't get saved. :-( Thank you. -- __________________________ DJ mailto: linux_programmer@hotmail.com
Hi, last week i posted something similar : this should be it approx ... :
Hi,
I succesfully managed to login on a KDE desktop on a windows 2000 machine using Xmanager (Win2k)
All I had 2 do was enable XDMCP broadcast on my Linux. I've done this on SuSE 8.0 and 8.1
I believe the file is located somewhere in /etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/ filename : kdmrc In there you will have to change from false to true:
[XDMCP] Enabled = True
THEN : in /etc/X11/xdm there are several files in here : xdm-config Xaccess Xservers Xresources
here the only thing I changed was this : in xdm-config : uncomment the following : DisplayManager.requestPort: 0
and in Xaccess set this:
# First line for direct queries * # Following line for indirect queries * CHOOSER BROADCAST
THEN RESTART XSERVER
Once all that is enabled you should see your Linux box pop up in Xmanager Browser (http://www.netsarang.com/products/xmanager.html)
I also had a reply from Leendert Meyer but I was unable to try this one out yet .. it is much quicker ;) In SuSE Linux 8.1: /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager: DISPLAYMANAGER_REMOTE_ACCESS="yes" Instead of all the things mentioned earlier, setting this variable most probably would have been enough! :-P Cheers, Leen regards Chris _____________________________________________ Make money while you work !!! http://www.degoo.com/index.php?refid=mersco This is for real !!! http://e-mailpaysu.com/members/index.cgi?mersco _____________________________________________ ----- Original Message ----- From: "DJ" <linux_programmer@hotmail.com> To: <suse-linux-e@suse.com> Sent: Monday, November 25, 2002 5:58 PM Subject: [SLE] VNC, KDM, Graphical Login

Hi If You want to see the "actual" KDE running, use "krfb". You can find it from sourceforge. Jaska. On Tuesday 26 November 2002 02:11, DJ wrote:

Hi, I See... You are using VNC ... Not much experience with that one unfortunately. .. only on Micro$oft machines ... I thought VNC was only possible for xterm ... oh well ... Unfortunatly I can't give you any help on VNC .. I only did it with a Xserver on windows called Xmanager ... That worked fine in th setup I mailed ... For VNC perhaps you have to edit kdm-config instead of the xdm files ... not sure ... Question : You want your KDE desktop through something like VNC ... on a windows computer ? or on a Linux box ? I know that if you use VNC on Windows it sends the complete desktop over to the client and consumes alot of bandwith . as for Xmanager it is kinda like a terminal but then graphical. Also the performance is much better! Other advantage: If you use Xmanager or similar the person who wants to work on the server itself can still do this while you get your own desktop on your client. regards Chris _____________________________________________ Make money while you work !!! http://www.degoo.com/index.php?refid=mersco This is for real !!! http://e-mailpaysu.com/members/index.cgi?mersco _____________________________________________ ----- Original Message ----- From: "DJ" <linux_programmer@hotmail.com> To: <suse-linux-e@suse.com> Sent: Tuesday, November 26, 2002 1:11 AM Subject: Re: [SLE] VNC, KDM, Graphical Login

You need to go into your home directory, then into the hidden .vnc directory, and edit the xstartup file. Mine is: #!/bin/sh xrdb $HOME/.Xresources xsetroot -solid grey xterm -geometry 80x24+10+10 -ls -title "$VNCDESKTOP Desktop" & kde & Chris Geske LIMS Manager Northern Lake Service, Inc. ph: 715-478-2777 email: lims@newnorth.net
you could also look through the VNC list archive. http://www.realvnc.com/pipermail/vnc-list/ http://www.realvnc.com/lists.html this particular subject is much talked about. good luck, michael hallsted ******************************* Chris Geske wrote:

Just wanted to add, we switched to xdm login manager and had NO problem using VNC. This confirms it is a problem with kdm and not VNC. We just copied the Xvnc lines from Xservers for kdm to XServers for xdm and rebooted and we were able to access Xvnc servers via xdm. i couldn't get it to work with kdm either, but it worked in xdm on the first try. I just put :1 local /usr/X11R6/bin/Xvnc :1 in /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers, and changed DisplayManager.pidFile: in /etc/X11/xdm/xdm-config so it could run at the same time as kdm. Then I just ran xdm from the command line and everything worked. I have no idea why it doesn't work in kdm :(

I have come to the conclusion that the problem is not with VNC but with kdm under SuSE 8.1. I think the key is the error message below. Error Message ------------- "Nov 25 18:06:20 russte08 kdm[1633]: Cannot read from config reader". SuSE has changed the location of kde configuration files from the /opt tree to the /etc tree --- this is good. But, I don't think they have completed all the changes they need to make for kdm. I have an older version of NetManager that I could try to connect with kdm on SuSE 8.1 to get VNC out of the way. But I'm pretty sure this is a SuSE 8.1 kdm problem. Thank you. -- __________________________ DJ mailto: linux_programmer@hotmail.com

I just want to point out that I'm not running SuSE's kdm, I'm running CVS code from kde.org. So I don't think it's a suse problem but a general kdm problem.

Hmm, still running SuSE Linux 7.2 with XFree86 4.2.0 (update), kernel 2.4.18(mantel src), and KDE 2.1.1(update). It seems to run great with kdm from kde2. (tested on a local machine over it's own IP) If you need some logging or files to compare just name them and I'll try to help... Anything other cool stuff you can do with vnc?????
