hi there,
i just installed 10.3 to an old athlon 1200. the problem is, that after shutting down suse, the computer does not turn off.
The last line on the screen is: Master Resource Control: Runlevel 0 has been reached
and then freezes.
it sounds like the harddisk is powered off, but the motherboard is still active and has to be switches off manually via powerbutton.
i already looked for options in bios but could not find any. any ideas?

This is a known PITA bug that for some reason has appeared in 10.3. See: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=331747 They are up to Comment #120 or so. I have 3 machines this problem affects 5-8 others that have no problem. Go figure...
I have a older machine with 10.3 with this problem. I found a work around by modifying /boot/grub/menu.lst to add apm=off and acpi=force. This assumes you are using Grub. My BIOS does not support acpi and shows up on boot as older than 2001(year). I have several comments as part of the 120. -- Russ Linux register user 441463 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Good to know! I have a dearth of older machines that used to be receptionist computers, etc. One funny trend is that the older dell seem to be plagued by the shutdown bug. The opposite occurs on the newer Toshiba laptops. I can shutdown just fine, but I cannot reboot. I also a 1 or 2 of the 120... No problems w/10.2 so there is something amiss. -- David C. or, perhaps a "millstone"? -- Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://counter.li.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

No, "dearth", really: Main Entry: dearth Pronunciation: \?d?rth\ Function: noun Etymology: Middle English derthe, from Old English *dierth, from de-ore dear Date: 13th century 1: scarcity that makes dear; specifically : famine So as I was saying, I have a few dear old computers that have this horrid lockup problem. So, when leaving the lakehouse and issuing a shutdown -h or halt, I come back a week later and find the boxes humming right along, all drives properly unmounted, etc.. right where the shutdown got stuck the week before. Very frustrating.... -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E. No, "dearth", really:
Hm, if so, then I would interpret it as "I want to have more, but I have only a few", which doesn't seem to fit the subject matter (old, cruddy machines that don't work very well)

A UPS where you can send it a command to simply cut power, perhaps? Anders -- Madness takes its toll -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thanks, the acpi=force was the magic bullet on my PIII 550 :) Regards, Matthias -- Matthias Bach www.marix.org "Was nicht mit einer gewissen Unsicherheit behaftet ist, kann unmöglich die Wahrheit sein." - Richard P. Feynman
