[opensuse] Looking around
My story: A few days ago we were greeted with a beeping ups when we awakened Determined finally that the power supply for my desktop (OS13.1) had failed and took the motherboard with it. Fortunately the hdd was ok. Being between paychecks and having already committed to a different project, repair or replace wasn't an option at this time so I cast a covetous look at the webserver which is running Ubuntu 16.04. Simple, right? Wrong. Apache will run on about any linux platform and Ubuntu is the newest thing I had on dvd at the time so that's why. HOWEVER, when I started trying to move my desktop operations over to it, I discovered what others may already know: Ubuntu 16.04 with its Unity desktop is a piece of sh_t. Software installation and changes? Forget the gui. Duckduckgo has been a real help. Today I have the final major piece of the desktop (thunderbird email) up and running so there is some degree of normalcy here again. I am anticipating the time when I have the funds to replace mobo + cpu + mem in my blown puter and drop OS15.1 in it. Liam: I am sorely tempted to reply to you in a manner which some might view as culturally insensitive and morally bankrupt but I think that I will let your comment speak for itself. Since I also am assuming that English is not your native language I will direct you to re-read the first paragraph you attached above and kindly tell me where the hatred resides. I detect no hatred or abuse of any kind, only truth. If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck... well, you get the idea. Your love of the Unity desktop was so overwhelmingly shared by the Ubuntu community that it got dumped in favor of Gnome. As for Synaptic, my installation of Ubuntu 16.04 did not come with it bundled so I am left with CLI: apt-get, dpkg, etc which is ok as I do not plan to use this system for more than a band-aid for my operations until such time as I can repair/replace my system that blew. My comments were meant to convey to this community the differences I ran into moving from opensuse (which blew) to ubuntu 16.04 (which was running on another computer here). After using opensuse for several years, I find the ubuntu experience quite limited. Yes, anything can be customised, you can put a V10 into a Volkswagen if you work at it hard enough but AS IT WAS INSTALLD FROM DVD, Ubuntu/Unity sucks compared to opensuse/KDE4. English is my first language and its fairly simple to work out what Liam was referring to i.e. "Ubuntu 16.04 with its Unity desktop is a piece of sh_t.". Even people who first language is not English would be able to work that out. Your response to his comment was just as rude and a mailing list is not the place for being rude. Just remember that things like desktop choices are subjective choices and that some will like and some will loathe the same one.
