Issue: I cannot execute Xwindow system due to the fact that I am using an ATI Radeon graphics card with XFree86 4.0 on SuSE 7.0. I need to download and install XFree 4.0.2. I have gone to http://suse.com/en/support/xsuse/index.html#xfree86402 and have read the release notes and the readme document. Inquiry: 1. I can't figure out which i386 files I need to download to properly install and run 4.0.2. (The readme doc says I can find the files in "glibc 2.1.3" but I don't see such a folder.) 2. My linux computer is not connected to the internet. Once I download the necessary files to my windows machine, how do I transfer the files to my linux computer and place them in the proper folder or directory in linux. What is the proper directory in which to place the files. 3. Once the files are placed in the right folder or directory, can I simply run xf86cfg or xf86config, and 4.0.2 will install itself, replacing my current 4.0 This is embarassing; I feel like a first-grader trying to read Noam Chomsky. All guidance greatly appreciated. Mike Flug michael.flug@snet.net

this is the place to start^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ now instead of clicking on the README or RELEASE NOTES links, click on the XFree86-4.0.2 link just above them, this will take you to ftp directory, then click the suse70 folder, then download all the rpms there into some directory....you will also need some files in the folders depending on which video card you have, see the readme for details on dri and which files are needed.

i didn't either

can you see the windows box using ftp? i can't log into my windows box from linux, but i can log into my linux box from the windows box and send the files to the linux box using ftp. -any directory will work, make one and call it pub, tmp, or something on the windows box, on the linux box just make a temporary directory somewhere like your ~ directory or /usr/src/PACKAGES/rpm

no -- follow instructions in the README commands they list DO work to unpack the rpms

Don, Thanks for the reply. It's great to get fast support when first starting out. I'm really interested in what you were saying about FTP from the Windows box to the Linux box.

Am I understanding correctly: I can just download the necessary XFree 4.0.2 files (I still don't know exactly which ones are needed for a successful install) onto my Windows computer, and then run a Network cable from my Windows Box network card to my Linux Box network card, and FTP the downloaded files into a chosen directory on the Linux box? This would be jammin'! I'm surprised that Windows would be able to read and decipher the Linux directory tree. Can you give me a few more tips on how to set up an FTP session using this configuration.

I tried using SuSE email support after registering my software and they still haven't gotten back to me either. I was kinda surprised because the company touts its customer support as a strong reason to go with SuSE. At any rate, I am thankful for the active minds who participate on this mailing list. I would try this site. My co-worker found a pre-written XF86Config file for these ATI laptop chipsets and his works fine. It's the IBM thinkpad as well. http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/kharker/linux-laptop/ Regards...and remember our support does care and we try to get to everyone as fast as possible..but our sales between 6.4 and 7.0 had such an increase that we are doing the best we can with our free email and phone support :) Again Regards and have fun! -- Ben Rosenberg mailto:brosenb@suse.com *************************************** SuSE Inc. 580 Second St Suite 210 Oakland CA 94607 U.S.A Tel: 1-510-628-3380 EXT:5086 Fax: 1-510-628-3381 *************************************** "My opinions are not a reflection of the opinions of SuSE Inc."
