How do I get a new kernel for 8.2 to work ? Dell Inspiron 8500
Hi, I'm trying to get Suse 8.2 working on an Dell Inspiron 8500 8.2 laptop. Most things work ok, but I'm having problems with the hardrive driveres (no DMA) and also some screenproblems (Sax doesn't support 1680x1050 LCD screens - fixed with my old RH9 config file). I got a few questions regarding this: 1) How long is it until a new SuSE-kernel comes out? What should I do to get the patches into it that's needed (they are trivial). 2) Should I expect help from SuSE on this (i.e. getting in a few patches in their kernel).I bought the pro version. Also, the patches are allready on this site: http://www.ee.surrey.ac.uk/Personal/G.Wilford/Inspiron8500/ However they are for the redhat kernel. 3) What is needed to get the latest 2.4.21rc to work with SuSE? I boot with lilo and get problems with kernel-panics for not beeing able to mount root. The kernel compiles though. I guess I'm missing some features here. I've tried mk_initrd -i <imagename> -k <kernelname> but that doesn't seem to be enough. 2.4.21-rc2 has the patches I need. Yours, Tarjei Huse

Check the people/mantel directory on the ftp site. You could try one of these, and I would recommend checking the changelog to see what is in that particular kernel.

You could edit the sources, make the changes, and recompile.

Recompiling a kernel is not included in the installation support AFAIK. You shouldn't need to recompile to get it working unless there is some really weird hardware.

Don't know.

What filesystem did you use for root?

did you give it any modules to load into the initrd, i.e. -m "jbd ext3" -- Joe Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Web Address: http://www.mydestiny.net/~joe_morris Registered Linux user 231871 God said, I AM that I AM. I say, by the grace of God, I am what I am.
