configuring kmail for gmail (particularly outgoing)
I managed to get kmail to download my gmail emails just fine, but it cannot send. Can someone please give me the proper config info. ? Could this be because of my ISP (earthlink) blocking me? How would I know? Any other ideas? Thanks -- Cheers, wmeler

You will probably find that you have to use your ISP's transport service to send the email although you can receive via Gmail. Ian

you HAVE to use Gmail's smtp server to send any mail with $user@gmail.com in from value. if not you'll simply receive an error, at least according to my experiences .... -- nicola .:kOoLiNuS:. losito http://koolinus.wordpress.com http://www.koolinus.net "If privacy is outlawed, only outlaws will have privacy." no, you must run your own mail server and, maybe, relay thru your isp. I use gmail posting address, but do *not* use gmail's smtp server :^). -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711 Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2
1) Thanks everyone! Still working this... 2) Did the error message I posted earlier (which I got from kmail) mean anything to anybody? Different ports give me different errors. By that, I mean that according to http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=13287 says to use either port 587 or 465. However I get different error messages for 465 vs. 587. I can't even tell which is closer to working, though it looks like 465 is better. Thoughts? 587's immediate error message: Sending failed: Your SMTP server does not support PLAIN. Choose a different authentication method. Here are my settings under "Sending" in kmail. I have highlighed the ones that seem most suspect to me: Under "Modify"...I get the "Modify Transport" box for "Transport:SMTP": "General" tab: Name:wmeler@gmail.com Host:smtp.gmail.com Port:465 [or 587, as mentioned earlier] Precommand:[LEFT IT BLANK] Server requires authentication (Checked ON) Login: wmeler@gmail.com Password: ********** Store SMTP password (Checked ON) Send custom hostname to server (Checked OFF) "Security" tab: Encryption:TLS Authentication Method:PLAIN [Check What the Server Supports completes without an error and gives me the same settings on the Security tab.] Common Options (below the "Outgoing accounts"): Confirm before send (UNCLICKED) Send messages in outbox folder: Never Automatically Default send method: Send Now Message property: MIME Compliant (Quoted Printable) Default Domain: 127.0.0.1 The last one bothers me the most, because I'm not sure what it was originaly set to. Receives continue to work just fine. -- Cheers, wmeler
thanks Arun for your continuing help...seems to work...kind of...in other words, i ran a bunch of tests and kmail gave me no errors...the scary thing is...i sent emails from one account to another...and only received 3 out of 15...ie. not working completely... (i turned off the firewall for a second to see if that mattered. it didn't seem to. same thing with messing with the outgoing mail section of the mail transport in yast. again, didn't seem to affect anything.) here's my .kmailrc file found in /home/wmeler/.kde/share/config/ in case you can see anything glaringly wrong...going to try the old reboot and pray method. : [$Version] check that you have to authenticate first, use TLS and that the usename comes complete (user@gmail.com). You might be blocked by your ISP. Some ISPs have alternate ports for use off network. Perhaps Gmail has one. Also, there's nothing to stop you from using your ISP's SMTP server, from your Gmail account.

Also, there's nothing to stop you from using your ISP's SMTP server, from your Gmail account Follow Gmail's setup instruction, I think they use SSL or some other setting, like TLS, that also changes the port it uses. It works fine in Thunderbird. BTW, you have to use the instructions for Outlook or Outlook Express.
