I am looking for some method of writing 0 to the free space on a partition leaving all files intact. The partition is /dev/hda3 and its mounted /home. Back in the days of pgp there was a command ... something like ... pgp -w SIZE=XXXXXXXX dump where XXXXXXXX was a kb size greater then the remaining free space on the partition. Running this in any directory on the partion would fail when the size of the free space was reached and leave a file dump the size of all the previous free space. One could then rm dump and have cleaned all free space from potential prying eyes. I have yet to find the equivalent in gpg. Is there one? Is there some other trick to doing this? Thanks john

Thanks john
Correction (thanks Randall):
And thanks for reminding me of /dev/zero. I knew there was a way to do this, but it escaped me when I wrote my reply, or I would have mentioned it. (And lastly, sorry for the private post--I missed changing the reply address.)
dd if=/dev/zero of=tmp.tmp bs=1024 count=xxxxxxx

dd if=/dev/zero of=tmp.tmp bs=1024 count=xxxxxxx
If I understand it correctly specifying a count larger than the available space will do no harm as the process would automagically stop when the real limit was reached. Could this be used on other partitions of the nonlinux variety such as mounted windows (16) and winblows (32) partitions? -- _______ _______ _______ __ / ____\ \ / / ____|_ _\ \ / / | | \ \ /\ / / (___ | | \ \ / / | | \ \/ \/ / \___ \ | | \ \/ / | |____ \ /\ / ____) |_| |_ \ / \_____| \/ \/ |_____/|_____| \/
