[SuSE Linux] Question regarding ver.of SuSE Linux 5.3

I'm new to Linux and have been reading/lurking for some time but now am ready to do it [the first install]. I've had my S.u.S.E. Linux 5.3 for about six months now. The date on the ends of the case of CD disks is July 1998. Is this this buggy edition from the early release, that was the talk of the day a few months back? Is it OK to go with or should I try and get a later release? Help with this potentially aggravating problem is welcomed now. Don't need extra difficulty if it can be avoided now. Thanks.. .... The problem with the original SuSE 5.3 CD#1 was that its disk partitioning routines could cause a problem if there was space on your hard drive that was not already allocated to some partition. Their web site gives a work around that basically says just go into DOS and create a new partition to mark off the unused space before you start the Linux installation. It is not a serious problem at all and easy to get around. In fact most people won't even notice any problem at all. Believe me, it's nothing compared to what you'll have to learn to get your soundcard or internet connection working. Your remarks above set my warning bells ringing. I've introduced many people to Linux and the ones who stayed with it were all IT professionals who wanted to use it as a learning tool. The ones who abandoned it did so fairly quickly when they understood that it was going to cost some effort on their part. If you found it difficult to understand the explanation on the SuSE site and you are that keen to avoid difficult initial experiences then I'd seriously suggest you avoid Linux for the time being as it is not yet exactly a user-friendly system in the sense that for example a Macintosh is reputed to be. Possibly Caldera OpenLinux differs in this respect (it's supposed to anyway) but all the Linux distributions I know need you either to be competent with Unix-type systems or to become competent. Basically you only get out of it what you are prepared to put into it. Problems do arise whenever you try something new with it but they are all soluble with a bit of effort. It differs from Windows in that respect of course. With Windows, it doesn't matter how competent you become, if something doesn't work properly, it simply never will no matter what you do to it. As it happens this is why I love Linux so much - I'm learning new stuff all the time, and most of what I've learned is easily applicable to other platforms. Oh, and of course, once you get something working on Linux it tends to stay working. I can understand the issue you have since I value myself as a pretty much a linux novice in a lot of things. I started messing around about two years ago after almost 8 years of OS/2 stuff. I hesitated at NT stuff for awhile since my work required it; but I have to admit my love was always OS/2 warp. It seemed so powerful and sleek yet people looked at it and compared it to some stationwagon while another operating system was a race car or airplane. Well... About dodging problems. I think its good to face issues head on with linux; do the battle first time and learn the lessons. Then move on to other battles and other lessons. Everyone did a linux install the first time. My first time was divided into intense periods of failure with somewhat shorter bursts of momentary success stretched over several botched installs. Even one that took my whole system down. I was pretty mad at that and went cautiously for some time. Now, my approach is to read the howto's, read the webstuff, read books, attempt to do the thing, perhaps fail and then return with new armor on. I would say I have learned a few things and I think linux is a fair teacher. My goals now are to make myself better at understanding linux, learn how to use adabas D and informix, and stretch my horizons a bit in other ways. That is what I have and I have no major problems. However, if possible download some of the updates from the web site and apply them as soon as possible. The one place that I had some trouble with that was partitioning with YaST. However, I found a workaround using my compy of System Comander. There is another workaround on the SuSE web site. Best of luck. Only problem I have is booting and installing from the cdrom. I have a SCSI CDROM and haven't figured out how to do it yet. I guess that's why they include a boot disk in the box : ) Other than that, no problems (I was running it in November and really had a neat time with it, now it's going onto a Celeron/BH6 combo) Ray Revette wrote:

They knew about those bugs even before the prodict was launched but the early release of a service pack would have been a pulic admission that the product was bug-ridden. One other downside of all those updates is that although there is a patch format for rpms, it's hardly ever used - you almost always have to download the whole package even for a minor bug fix. And then you've got to find space for it on backup media too. Couldnt find it. Sorry, maybe someone has a description on what to do. I had the message but lost it. It involved starting fdisk using x pert mode and defineing your drives heads-cylinders-& sectors h #of heads c#of cylinders s#of sectors then r eturn to regular fdisk and partition accordingly swap native etc. Then the installation can procede. If you have no experience with linux fdisk, I can understand you'll need a better explanation than this ;-) rob Linux Home page <A HREF="http://www.connix.com/~dizzy73/LBM.htm"><A HREF="http://www.connix.com/~dizzy73/LBM.htm</A">http://www.connix.com/~dizzy73/LBM.htm</A</A>> - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>
