Can't start MySQL saith the newbie.
HI all. I just installed SuSE 9.0 via ftp. I have installed apache and php and now I would like to get mysql running. I installed mysql and mysql client via YAST but I can't seem to start it. I type mysql start at the command line and get the following error. Any ideas? Regards from Denmark. Dan *> mysql start* ERROR 2002: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)

Make sure it isn't in fact running anyway. Sometimes the rc scripts report failure even though it works. Just in case...

I did a ps -A and I can't see mysql running.

Is mysql installed? try rpm -qa | grep mysql mine shows mysql-shared-4.0.15-9 mysql-4.0.15-9 mysql-client-4.0.15-9 mysqlcc-0.9.2-66 qt3-mysql-3.2.1-37 if it shows you that mysql is installed then as root do /etc/init.d/mysql start I think there is a problem in SuSE 9.0 as mysql does not seem to start automatically on a reboot. Phil

Not sure if this is done in 9.0, but you can copy a my.cnf file from /usr/share/doc/packages/mysql/cnf/ to /etc/my.cnf In the file you explicitly set the socket path and ports [client] port = 3306 socket = /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock [mysqld] port = 3306 socket = /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock I think you also need to run the /usr/bin/mysql_install_db util before you can use the server.
