[SLE] Good news and need help: Lucent win modem

Just to share my joy, the installation of 7.1pro on my office's notebook (Acer TravelMate 734TL) is very smooth and no problem, everything (sound, video, Ethernet port, USB mouse) are working with only one exception: the built-in Lucent win modem. I tried the Lucent driver but it refused to work and complaint on Not working under Kernel 2.4? I really like to get it to work so that I don't need to use PCMCIA modem (sound like a joke to others). Can someone help me on this or is there any newer driver for the Lucent win modem? TIA, Dennis/sg

Sorry about that Dennis, but win modems don't work with Linux. What makes a win modem work is the software that is loaded into windows. The only modems that work are true modems that does not require that software. Nevada

Not so true anymore, esp. win modems. check out www.linmodems.org Matt On Sunday 11 March 2001 11:32, Nevada wrote:

A little homework may save you a lot of embarrassment. The lucent winmodem driver location is to be found on http://www.linmodems.org. I am using the drivers with kernel 2.2.18, and they work well. Not quite correct, I just got a Winmodem, with a Lucent chipset, to work by installing ltmodem-5_78e_tar.gz. In fact, that's how I'm sending this. On Sunday 11 March 2001 02:32 pm, Nevada wrote:

See: http://walbran.org/sean/linux/stodolsk/ download the latest driver (ltmodem-5.78e.tar.gz) and compile it. There are some specific instuctions for compiling for 2.4 in there as well. Hi Chris, I followed your direction and almost make it, BUT! The module refused to compile, complaining that it's designed for 2.4.0 and my is 2.4.0-4GB (what the hell is the -4GB doing here?). Is there anyway to remove the -4GB by other means? I am going to give it a last try, and if fail, I will reinstall with both 2.2.18 and 2.4.0(-4GB) kernel, maybe that is faster. :( Dennis/sg the
built-in Lucent win modem.

Find the file /usr/src/linux/include/linux/version.h and try changing the the line: #define UTS_RELEASE "2.4.0-4GB" to: #define UTS_RELEASE "2.4.0" and see if that works.

Hi Chris, I tried your suggestion to change the kernel # (version.h) but it already shown as "2.4.0", so I believed it is in somewhere else. I tried both 2.2.16 and 2.4.0 kernel and both not working. So far, no joy on getting it to work on my Acer TM734TL notebook. :( Dennis/sg

I'm running out of ideas here, but do you have the Linux include files installed as well as the kernel sources for your two kernels? You shouldn't, but if you do, the confiure script may be picking up the wrong version.h.
