strange email problem, not Linux
As I have not been able to use Linux since a major crash a month or so ago, I am corresponding via Eudora on Windows XP. (I will install 9.2 as soon as it comes out.) However, some kind of goofyness caused Eudora Pro 4 to terminate abruptly after downloading about 6 messages. Reloading the program from scratch did not help. Since this is not an MS product, I am surprised that it was attacked, and the problem may be some kind of fluke, but I thought I would alert the group. I called my ISP and had them remove all the mails from the inbox at their end, and so far, I can receive mail again. There does not seem to be any indication in Google of this situation, so it may be just a crazy fluke, but it could be that someone decided that he doesn't like Qualcomm, and put some kind of virus or worm on line. I don't know how such a thing could work, but it was certainly repeatable. (I could d/l the same 6 messages any number of times, but no more than those.) Then Eudora complained (upon being restarted) that the Inbox directory was corrupted, and would I like to recreate it. It didn't matter whether I did or not, the problem remained. I would appreciate any feedback from any of you out there who have run into this, and especially if you have found a way to fix it. --doug

I had problems recently using Eudora. My ISP uses imaps and imap port is closed. Eudora insists in connect first using imap - after some trying to figure out why, I could change the default protocol to imaps. I was not surprised when Euroda complained about ssl and other stuff, and could not read any email. To make a long story shot, changed to Thunderbird. To set it up, no more than 5 minutes. Eudora, a powerfull mail reader from the good old times, is a lot behind the others. Try thunderbird, or even pine/mutt for windows! :-) http://www.washington.edu/pine/getpine/pcpine.html http://www.geocities.com/win32mutt/win32.html -- Marcos Lazarini

Sounds like a malformed piece of mail on the mail server caused Eudora to choke. That's not an uncommon occurrence and I would say it is unlikely that your mail client was an intentional target. It's more likely that it choked on one of the many many malformed pieces of spam that break just about all of the mail rfcs. I had this service call on my in-laws two months ago. While they weren't running Eudora (Outlook Express,) they had the same problem. Dealing with their ISP, Bell Sympatico, had us going though the messages on the server and removing them from the queue. It turned out to be one specific message was responsible for the problem. Speculation is that it was some-how malformed and causing problems.

You should have tried another email program (mozilla, for example) before requesting the ISP to remove the whole lot. As others have said, my guess is you had a malformed email message there (#6 or7). Even fetchmail had some problems when this things started appearing. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
