New thread about the sound problems I'm having in 9.3 (rather than hijacking the other thread which was not only about sound problems) To summarize, sound was working fine, until I rebooted. After a reboot I had two problems... no more KDE, and no sound. The missing KDE was fixed by editing my sysconfig file and changing it back to KDE (from tvm). But.. the sound... the best I can get out of 9.3 right now is two stutters of sound and then nothing. Someone suggested (on the other thread) that it might be artsd not playing nicely and to kill it and disable it. I've done that and still have the exact same results... two stutters of sound and then nothing. /var/log/messages has this: --------- Apr 22 16:37:29 linux kernel: ALSA sound/core/pcm_lib.c:2113: playback write error (DMA or IRQ trouble?) Apr 22 16:37:39 linux kernel: ALSA sound/core/pcm_native.c:1433: playback drain error (DMA or IRQ trouble?) --------- A bit of Googling and I see posts of other people with similar probs, but no real solutions...or ideas. The closest I've seen to a solution is a Kernel patch on a 2.6.0 Beta kernel. Not something I'd particularly like to tinker with. Anyone else encounter this?

Yes, not exactly like your problem, but close enough. Got my 9.3 yesterday and did a clean install. It noticed my 2 sound cards perfectly (SB Live! and an Audigy2 Value). When all was said and done, I had no sound at all from either card. Did a bunch of the updates/patches with YoU, and suddenly this morning my SB Live! works, but still not the Audigy2. It's got to be something to do with the patches is all I can figure. I just *really* want my Audigy2 to work since I spent some hard earned money on some Z-680 speakers setup and all I have are two sat's and the woofer working right now.

Well... I just did a new/clean install with all patches and no sound at all... it's not a KDE thing. the sounds was borked during the install but after the update. Since I have loads of time on my hands this evening :-P I'll try it without the updates....

I also had no sound initially, but you have to configure the sound card(s) in Yast first. Yast>Hardware>Sound>Volume Initially the volume is turned down to 0 in the configuration *but it does not show in the mixers*. Best regards, -- Jos van Kan www.josvankan.tk

Tried without YOU updates (on a clean install) and it's still the same... test the sound with any app, in YaST or in KControl and all the same... I get two quick notes/sounds and then deafening silence. Killed artsd and disabled it, then restarted the sound system... no change... two blips of sound and then nothing.

Don't think that's it. I've thought of that and messed with the volumes during install, after install, before doing a YOU, after doing a YOU... it's all the same.... two blips of sound and then nothing. A little experimenting... killed artsd, and disabled it. Fired up RealPlayer (cuz I haven't installed other players yet) and used it to play an OGG. I get several (10+) "pulses" of music before it cuts out. I know it did work initially. I installed WinXP on hda, but didn't do anything with it. Then I installed 9.3 on hdb. Everything worked fine. Played a game with sound, listened to some OGGs, checked out a movie (after installing MPlayer and the codecs).... worked fine. Then I shut down booted XP, and set it up. oddly, it didn't find the sound card (an SiS7012). Tinkered with the drivers in XP, and installed the latest SiS driver and the AC'97 codecs. All working there, so I booted back to Linux and that's when my troubles started. I can't imagine that installing sound drivers in XP (which is installed on it's own HD) would affect a Linux install... but I'm running out of ideas. I know sound worked perfectly on the initial 9.3 install. So... not making much progress here.... any other suggestions?

When you are rebooting from Windows to Linux is it a warm reboot or a cold, hard one? Do you just let it reboot via shutdown commands (warm) or do you hit the reset button (hard) once Windows shuts down and before it begins its boot up? Or do you do a full power off, unplug the power for 30 seconds or so and then power back on (really cold)? Some systems don't have a very clean warm reboot cycle. Some hardware gets left in a state that the OS doesn't deal with well or doesn't know to clear. A cold reboot with a power interruption can clear those settings. IF (thats a big if there) your system behaves differently rebooting from Windows to Linux depending on the method of rebooting, warm versus cold, that could be it. Sometimes BIOS settings can change that behavior. Sometimes newer drivers or changes in kernel routines will fix it. My main system has this capability and I always forget about it until the next upgrade... maybe not this time though. My choice of DHCP client fixed my NIC not being found on warm reboots in the past. Stan

Stan, can you elaborate more on this? I have the same problem. From time to time on a "warm" reboot, my NIC does not get DHCP info, and I need to ifdown/ifup after that in order to have network. I use 9.1. And it happens even between "warm" reboot SuSE-SuSE, without messing up with XP. Sunny -- Get Firefox http://www.spreadfirefox.com/?q=affiliates&id=10745&t=85

This started either in the 8.0 or 8.1 release. Back then I was rebooting to Windows often enough that it was a problem to fix. I ended up switching to the ISC DHCP client (dhcp-client) for several releases and then about 9.1 or 9.2 the default DHCP client (dhcpd) was fixed. Or whatever was the problem was fixed; kernel parameter or other driver? In this machine I use 2 different Compaq branded Intel 10/100 cards that use the e100 driver. I tried different ethernet card(s), cables, different PCI slots, different 10/100 switches, etc. Finally saw someone else on this list mention that switching dhcp client software fixed similar problems they were having. Worked for me too! I haven't seen this on any other 10/100 card I tried in this system; they weren't as efficient or reliable as the Intels though. There wasn't any firmware update for these cards either so they are at the latest version level. Ancient cards by todays standards but they keep working. My mainboard was/is at the latest BIOS version too. Not much else to change to isolate the problem at the time. What worked reliably to get the NICs recognized in Linux was to hit the reset button or do the full power off/on at the power supply via switch or power cord. Windows versions were 98SE, Win2k Pro and AS with various patch levels and SPs applied. It always worked in Windows. :( :( :( I don't even think about it now because whatever was not right has been fixed. It wasn't the change from 2.4.x to 2.6.x kernels either. Does that also rule out a kernel parameter or other driver getting fixed? Hmmm... Stan

Hmm, I'm using 9.1, and the card is Dell on board (Intel based, so the driver is e100 as well. After I figure out how to configure an alternative dhcp client, I'll give it a try. The strange thing is that this problem does not happen always, only from time to time. And I do not reboot very often, usually only after kernel updates, so it may take a long time to see if this fixes the problem. Thanks anyway. When you are rebooting from Windows to Linux is it a warm reboot or a cold, hard one?
I was just doing the warm boot thing. At your suggestion I tried a real cold reboot... machine off and unplugged for a while. Made no difference to the sound problem James' suggestions about flashing or writing to nram started me on the next step in this... I booted back to Windows, removed all the sound drivers (SiS7012 and AC'97) and reinstalled them paying close attention to what was going on... nothing too odd... had to reboot Windows a few times to get the drivers removed and reinstalled. Poked about in Windows and the sound was working fine there just like it was before I removed the drivers. Booted back to Linux. Now here is where things go weird. Sound works in Linux now. Huh???? Everything is back to where it was before. I made no changes at all on the Linux side after the initial experimenting with killing artsd etc. Just several reboots... This makes very little sense to me... I can guess that maybe it has to do with some state the Windows drivers place the SiS chipset into that affects how it works in Linux... dunno. I rarely boot to Windows... except to play games once in a while... think i'll leave things alone for now... cross my fingers and hope it keeps working. Weird.... ...

When you 'tinkered' with the drivers in XP, did the driver update flash the hardware? If so, you may not get things working in Linux. I don't know if the install for the XP drivers told you anything, it may be worth checking out the vendors website or e-mailing them if you don't know. If you have not put too much time into 9.3 yet (besides the sound problem) it may be worth a re-install. If the XP drivers did flash the chip on the soundcard the 'rollback driver' function in the 'Device Manager' may not properly roll the driver back. You may be able to re-flash with an older driver or some utility on the vendors site. Good luck! - James W.

Is your Bios set up to indicate that a Plug N Play Os is installed? If so, the Bios will skip configuring the pnp cards. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

Yep.. Probably about the time the ftp version is released. And that is usually about a month to 6 weeks after it ships. The FTP version is not released for 4-6 weeks after the boxed set is. Check back in 2-4 weeks.
