[opensuse] Suggestions for USB external HD
I need help with buying an external HD. I bought an Iomega eGo external 160 GB USB hard drive but it is not recognized by my os 11.0 linux only box. I thought it would work like my USB flash drives. Searching the web I found nothing about drivers but on Hardware4Linux I found that all Western Digital cards work on linux. TigerDirect has a Western Digital Firewire/USB2.0 combo about the same size. Does anyone have a recommendation on this or any other external HD? A USB external drive should just open in Konqeror like a usb key. I have two and that is how they both work.
I thought it would work like my USB flash drives.
Yes. That is correct.
Searching the web I found nothing about drivers but on Hardware4Linux I found that all Western Digital cards work on linux.
There should be no driver needed. Is the drive ATA/SATA?
TigerDirect has a Western Digital Firewire/USB2.0 combo about the same size.
Does anyone have a recommendation on this or any other external HD?

Western Digital My-Book line are very nice. I use one for backup on linux. they automatically shut down if you are not using them. I formatted mine with reiserfs. Works very well. But basic usb and or firewire enclosures are dirt cheap, and I've used them as well, just slap in what ever drive i want to use. I've never had Linux object to one of these. -- ----------JSA--------- Someone stole my tag line, so now I have this rental. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

What does "not recognized" mean? Hard drives are useless before you partition them and install filesystems on the partition(s). Can't parted, fdisk or cfdisk find it? What does 'lsusb' show?
I thought it would work like my USB flash drives.
They should.

What is a "Western Digital card"?

If I/O speed makes any difference to you, buy external SATA instead of USB. They're more than 3X faster, and don't get assigned ahead of your boot HD unless you want them to. -- "Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labor in vain." Psalm 127:1 NIV Team OS/2 ** Reg. There are some of those external drives that require Windows to work or deliver full funtion. I don't recall the details though. -- Use OpenOffice.org <http://www.openoffice.org> -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Maybe you mean those with an ethernet plug and a cpu, supporting samba and sometimes some functions requiring windows. Some can be directly connected to Internet, too. They may have also an USB plug (client and/or server). I also read of an Iomega or Seagate (not sure which) disk that when it went to sleep was not awake-able from Linux, only from windows, because it returned to life in USB version 1, ie, lower speed. It was commented here some months ago. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. That is true.....Seagate. I have one, but use it most of the time connected as ESATA...use only as a backup appliance. I think the problem is not with the drive but with Linux. There was rumor that this was going to be fixed, but whether it was or not, I don't know. I bought an ULTRA IDE Hard Drive enclosure from Tiger Direct and 110.0 recognizes it and it's multiple partitions. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I have an external USB HDD cache from SNT whose model also includes a fan for the enclosed drive. for home use the unit is great and just works. On the enterpeose side you could always look into a Drobo as it is a RAID like array but without the limitations of RAID. I would love to get one for home but the price tag is a little steep. The drive should be using normal "USB Mass Storage" class -- no drivers or setup will be needed under openSUSE 11.0. I am thinking your issue is the drive not being formatted. FWIW I have a CoolMax brand enclosure purchased from NewEgg.com. It was cheap but the quality isn't bad. It works under openSUSE 10.3, 11.0 and all version of Windows I've tried. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I don't recall the details, but there are some external drives that are optimized for Windows and cause problems for Linux. It's best to stay away from those. The safest bet is to buy separate drives and cases. That way you'll avoid this nonsense. -- Use OpenOffice.org <http://www.openoffice.org> -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

At work i've got two drives: Bus 005 Device 008: ID 1058:1001 Western Digital Technologies, Inc. External Hard Disk Bus 005 Device 007: ID 0930:0b03 Toshiba Corp. The Toshiba (300GB) just worked out-of-the-box, The WD was not recognized at all on systems older then 10.3. At home i ran into trouble with an LaCie ethernet disk Although it has an USB-2.0 interface, you can not use it under linux, though it works under XP. Thankfully the box has an Gb ethernet interface and can works as an smb-server. Regretfully this box can not be reached with neither nfs nor ssh. hw -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thanks for all the replies but still no sign of appearing anywhere, including the end of /var/log/messages. I plugged it into my wife's 4 year old Dell WinXP and it showed up with the right name and size. So I copied a photo and doc file onto it. Then I plugged the drive into an even older HP which I am using for Ubuntu Studio. The drive showed up with the photo and doc like it should with no install needed. Both old computers have USB 1.0. Back to my new linux 11.0, the drive light blinks for a while, but nothing shows up anywhere. I have 4 USB connections with 2 flash cards and one HP printer with no problems. All 4 connections work. Any more ideas? If not, I will format it on Ubuntu Studio as ext3 and try again. You could have said all this the first time, it changes perspective dramatically. If it works on another computer with Linux, then it is recognized by Linux. It may be a hardware problem in your main computer, like a bad cable. Or a desktop problem, as Rajko suggests.
Any more ideas? If not, I will format it on Ubuntu Studio as ext3 and try again.
Don't. That's not the problem. On a terminal, type "dmesg" after plugin the device, see messages there. And/or type "lsusb". Or try with another desktop. kde3/4/gnome. - -- Cheers, Carlos E.
