The fact that the top three enterprise databases only run on commercial Unix is probably one of the few things that keeps commercial Unix alive. Sybase is getting ready to port to Linux, and will probably be first to market, although the boneheads at Informix have been pummled for 18 months by a very dedicated developer core who want informix to go Linux, but top management at Informix just can't "get it".
Tom,
Has Sybase given a release date for there port?? You where never able to convince Informix to port to Linux?? Is the Informix list still up and running??
Re: SybaseI haven't seen a release date yet, but I had seen a post or to from a Sybase devloper who is very excited about Linux, and it also appears that he has some level of management support to either begin experimentation or completeion, I don't know, although there are some Sybase libraries that can already be used - I can't remember for the moment exactly what they do or are for - but they can be used in some capacity on Linux. Re: Informix The list is still up, and details are on my brother's site at: <A HREF="http://www.inxutil,com</A">http://www.inxutil,com</A> - sorry I don't have the complet URL - you'llhave to dig around a bit there. The devlopers are starting to feel pretty alienated by Informix, however, most of them are extremely passionate about the superiority of Informix and its capabilities, they just feel that Informix just doesn't know how to market what they feel is the world's best db. I have rarely seen such dedication towards a product, and yet such snubbing by a vendor (Informix).
I too have Sparc stations, for one reason only, to run Oracle & Sybase Servers. All the x86 machines run Linux. I would like to get rid of the Sparcs! SCO and Solaris X86 are already gone. Database of choice for now is ADABAS, would love to also be able to offer Sybase, Oracle, or Informix.
Good piece!, Later

It's only a matter of time. The first of the big boys (db OEMs) to market will get the lion's share of the market. The problem seems to be that the "big 3" (or 4) commercial db vendors continue to pan Linux. Since they have all become ledgends in their own minds (atta boy Larry Ellison) , they sneer at Linux like a bastard step child and ignore its superior capabilites over the MS product suite, and its economy for businesses vs SCO, Solaris, et al . The ironly is that Linux will give them the x86 Unix market back from MS if they all start using the the newer "Netscape-style" pricing and Internet distribution and licensing models. Informix, Novell, IBM, Lotus, these are all formerly great companies, however, their inability to adapt quickly to the newer paradigms in the market has kept them all lagging behind inthe market. They all cling to 80's MBA style management and thier corporations are filled with technology-ignorant marketing "professionals" who help them slip further and further behind. -tks- -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
