Re: [SLE] kppp says modem in use!
In the past, I've been able to use kppp (and indeed previously the command-line stuff in /etc/ppp, or wherever it is) to give me a dial-up connection. But I didn't use it much, since most of my online time was via Windows. Now I want to do it all in Linux, but kppp always tells me "Sorry, modem is in use".
I don't believe I've done anything (knowingly!) since it last worked to make it break in this way. As far as I am aware, the modem most definitely isn't in use. (And it works fine in Windows.) My /dev/modem is pointing to the right device, I believe - I've tried specifying the device directly too.
You need to provide more info, internal or external modem? If it's an internal, make sure you disable the motherboard's serial port that conflicts with the modem's irq. Also if it's a pnp modem, make sure you have isapnp setup to initialize the modem.
It's an internal modem at COM4:/ttyS3. IRQ is 3 and port is 2e8 - just as I would expect (according to the PPP/modem-related stuff I've managed to read in the meantime). When I've had it working before in Linux, I've not had to mess with motherboards or isapnp. BTW, I noticed in /var/log/messages the following, which might be useful: pppd 2.3.5: started by root tcgetattr: Input/Output error(5) Exit. Well are any of your motherboard's serial ports setup to use irq3? Mine defaults to giving irq3 to com2 which shares irq3 with com4. Go into system bios and disable the serial port which is using irq3. -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
