The future of SuSE Linux as we know it?
I'm still confused as to what product offerings will be available in the future. I've been using SuSE linux since 5.2, and have purchased the Professional distribution with every release. Looking over the website, I don't see it offered anymore. Can someone please clarify what the future of the traditional SuSE Linux distribution will be? -- "Whoever controls the histories of nations controls those nations and their peoples." Germar Rudolf

SuSE Linux retail - This is the boxed set equivalent to professional 3. SuSE Linux Enterprise Server(SLES) - Enterprise Linux - 2 year release cycle 4. SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop(SLED) - Enterprise Desktop. Same release cycle as SLES. -- Jerry Feldman <gaf@blu.org> Boston Linux and Unix user group http://www.blu.org PGP key id:C5061EA9 PGP Key fingerprint:053C 73EC 3AC1 5C44 3E14 9245 FB00 3ED5 C506 1EA9

Anders, I can't talk to the old FTP setup, nor the above as it stands today. I can say that for the first couple of months age 10.0 was released the above locations were NOT equivalent to what SUSE did with 8.0 -> 9.3 With those releases I could do a basic install via CD. If later I needed to add the yast packages I found of interest I had 100% success install the additional packages via yast and the official online source. With 10.0 I found this NOT to be true. I had several packages I wanted to install to CD only machines. Since the packages were only on the DVD, I tried the above sites you mention. The did NOT contain the packages I was looking for. I ended up buying an external DVD drive so I could move it around from machine to machine so I could have access to the full 10.0 retail package. I consider that a definite step backwords in the SUSE distro mechanism. FYI: I posted about this on this list several times. Typically I used the example of mt_st not being available on the sites you listed, but there were others. Greg -- Greg Freemyer The Norcross Group Forensics for the 21st Century

Not sure what that was about, I don't think I saw those posts, but it's certainly there now: http://ftp.gwdg.de/linux/suse/opensuse/distribution/SL-10.0-OSS/inst-source/... As far as I'm aware, everything should be there

I am sure someone can, but then it will be argued about, misdirected, the poster beaten, abused, and persuated to dunk his/her head in a vat of toxic waste before the list (using the L reply-to feature) will finallycome to an agreement right in time for Novell to decide (while at a very expensive bar in Boston) that the names should be changed once again. I think that it will take more than just a name change - although it would definitely help - to keep SuSE's past glory going well into the future. The Novell management needs to pull its collective fingers out and stop fart-arsing around with the stable, professional distro that we all got to love. I have my serious doubts whether I will buy another copy of SuSE in the future. In the latest TUX magazine there is a comparison of several Linux distros and SuSE does NOT come up on top. The top choice is Mandriva, and SuSE is beaten by other distros (Mepis comes in 2nd and Fedora as 3rd). Cheers. -- Yes, I AM a certified Cleavage Inspector.

Yes, I am in agreement with this sentiment. I have the strong feeling that a lot of others think this way too.

I read this yesterday afternoon. It's interesting reading but I don't agree with the overall result. It does seem to be skewed. What you have to bear in mind is that it is not a proper comparison. All of the distro's tested were done on different machines. This is not a true and comparative test. If the testing was doen on the same PC/laptop then I think the results would be different. However, each tester did seem to be biased in that it appears that they tested their own personal favourite distro. I may be incorrect about this last bit but it certainly seems that way. -- ============================================== I am only human, please forgive me if I make a mistake it is not deliberate. ============================================== Xmas may be over but, PLEASE DON'T drink and drive you'll make it to the next one that way. Being reviewed by someone who is using the distro as a personal favourite would normally produce a score of 5 for each of the features being tested wouldn't you agree :-) ? I thought the same as you but after seeing the marks given to each feature I felt that the reviewer was trying to be very objective - ?maybe trying too hard - and so was being very critical of the bad bits. To me, if what I felt is correct, this means that if I am a SuSE fanatic and give it a bad score for a feature then I must really be peed-off about that "feature". But then what do I know? Cheers. -- Yes, I AM a certified Cleavage Inspector.
