Hi all, It seems that there will always be someone asking about what a particular linux program does ie is it a browser, an email client, an emulator etc. I myself am always curious as to what is available. I am wondering if anyone knows of a site that defines what each of the linux packages is and does and that can be searched, so that if I was looking for emulators WINE, VMWare and CrossOverOffice would come up? And yes I know WINE is not an emulator :) Any ideas before I try and mess with Google search criteria to get an answer? -- The Little Helper ======================================================================== Hylton Conacher - Licenced ex-Windows user (apart from Quicken) Registered Linux user # 229959 at http://counter.li.org Currently using SuSE 9.0 Professional with KDE 3.1 ========================================================================

A good source of programs and information is Freshmeat.net There are a heck of a lot of open source etc files there, with descriptions of what they do - you also have categorical indices too.
Don't know if this is what you were looking for, but... Jon

I've found a lot of useful information simply by poking around in YaST. Then again I've found a few comments such as "This program is essential for those who need it." It has often been the case that the program I find out on the net that solves a particular problem has been sitting on my DVD the whole time. What about this? http://linuxshop.ru/linuxbegin/win-lin-soft-en/table.shtml It is not what you ask exactly, but it has a long list of programs, and clasified by what they do (in a short sentence). Not a bad display at all but the site could be a little more organized, sorry I just felt it was more an amateurish page with biggish text etc. A search feature would have been nice too, that actually works.
I think I'll stick to linux on TUCOWS and Google if I need to. -- The Little Helper ======================================================================== Hylton Conacher - Licenced ex-Windows user (apart from Quicken) Registered Linux user # 229959 at http://counter.li.org Currently using SuSE 9.0 Professional with KDE 3.1 ========================================================================

It has not been updated for months, it seems. However, a text search is possible: after all, it is a single html file, so you can do a text search with your browser. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
