[SuSE Linux] initial observations of redhat 5.2 (subjective - read it if youmust)
Greetings- If you got past the subject and want to read my decidedly subjective opinions of redhat 5.2 you are in the right place. I did a redhat install on /dev/hdb1 and am still wrestling with how to be able to compile a kernel and get it seen by lilo on /dev/hda. But thats not a redhat problem. I started by doing almost a complete custom installation and the install process was done in about 30 minutes. When I want to compile some things, it appears that some x devel things are missing. I dont understand why redhat would not include the xforms 88 libs since they are needed to compile things like xfmail or xisp. I dont particularly care for the netcfg thing. Its too big and clunky. SuSE did the xisp compile outa the box... The install was quite easy by anyone's standards and I was able to go into my suse distribution, mount the drive with redhat, find the kernel and copy it over, and then run lilo and go there directly. I have to admit that the installation was uneventful and went smoothly. Applications that come with redhat seem to be a mixed and varied bag but there are a lot. The cd rom set comes with 2 cd's and one cd of applications. Its a lot. Desktop standards. I boot into the fvwm2 desktop but I dont like it. There is no yast type tool to move .fvwm2rc files around. Got to go looking. Configuration of the X server was quite easy since the install packager identified everything for me. An odd thing was that it found my adaptec 2940 ultrawide card but did not give me this in the kernel. Oh well, got to read about how to compile a kernel next. Ease of use. Redhat 5.2 is quite easy to setup. I got sendmail.cf aliasing my email address immediately and got online after locating and building wvdial. What I like the best. I like suse; I like redhat. I like em both. I cannot seem to find the x development libraries in redhat and therefore cannot compile things too well. My favorite emailer, tkrat, fails even though the rpm succeeds. I could not compile it either even though redhat has the latest tcl/tk on board. Extremely subject recommendation. RedHat 5.2 is worth it. I enjoy using it and figuring things out about it. SuSE is quite worth it. Use both and be happy. Next chapter - next week. Turbolinux. Stay tuned. Copy the redhat kernel from /dev/hdb1/boot to /dev/hda where your suse kernel is. Rename it vmlinuzr. Then edit lilo.conf, and copy your section for suse, and append it to the end of lilo.conf. Change the image to /vmlinuzr and the root to /dev/hdb1. It works here. All my kernels sit side by side on /dev/hda. - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>

This is what I did. This is not an optimal solution. But its the only thing so far that works for me. I am going to try BEos next. Anyone got beos to load from lilo? -- Michael E.
