The dns servers for that domain are down, invalid, not working... Try quering some other domain instead for your tests.
ns1.musicreports.com is fine:
No, it is not:
nimrodel:~ # host ns2.musicreports.com Host ns2.musicreports.com not found: 3(NXDOMAIN) nimrodel:~ # host ns1.musicreports.com Host ns1.musicreports.com not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)
Well, seen from here "musicreports.com" works fine. Maybe it had a problem at some point, and the negative TTL is too long? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Thanks for the tests, folks, however the server that I am testing is not available to the public. The public server is on the original server running suse 9.3. The server I am setting up is 11.0 and when when I direct queries to it publically no mail exchange is found. I had do redirect dns queries back to the old server. Below is the error I get when checking the zone on the 11.0 server. <snip> # named-checkzone musicreports.com /var/lib/named/master/musicreports.com /var/lib/named/master/musicreports.com:13: ignoring out-of-zone data (demo) /var/lib/named/master/musicreports.com:14: ignoring out-of-zone data (ftp) /var/lib/named/master/musicreports.com:15: ignoring out-of-zone data (mail) /var/lib/named/master/musicreports.com:16: ignoring out-of-zone data (smtp) /var/lib/named/master/musicreports.com:17: ignoring out-of-zone data (ns1) /var/lib/named/master/musicreports.com:18: ignoring out-of-zone data (ns2) /var/lib/named/master/musicreports.com:19: ignoring out-of-zone data (www) /var/lib/named/master/musicreports.com:20: ignoring out-of-zone data (smtp-relay) zone musicreports.com/IN: NS 'ns1.musicreports.com' has no address records (A or AAAA) zone musicreports.com/IN: NS 'ns2.musicreports.com' has no address records (A or AAAA) zone musicreports.com/IN: musicreports.com/MX 'mail.musicreports.com' has no address records (A or AAAA) zone musicreports.com/IN: mail.musicreports.com/MX 'mail.msicreports.com' (out of zone) has no addresses records (A or AAAA) zone musicreports.com/IN: loaded serial 2009042002 OK <snip> However all the addresses are there. As a test, I've just installed bind on an 11.1 virtual machine and then copied across all the zone files and named.conf from my 9.3 system. After starting up bind on the virtual machine, and then checking for known hosts under my domain, it returned the expected results. Checking the zone files with named-checkzone from bind on 11.1 also returned an "OK" result. So, given the above, I'd hazard a guess that there's something wrong with the zone file that makes bind 9.5.0 refuse to use them, but bind 9.3.2 ignores the error and "works"[0].
Any suggestions?
As Per says, post a copy of the zone file so any errors can be spotted and the fixes given.
Thanks again for your help.
[0] for some value of works which may vary between "returns correct results" to "doesn't return anything".
