Actually, I did this as my second mistake after I finally got the kernel to actually compile at about 480K. The first time around it was too big to compile properly, and I thought I had cut it to the quick on options. Go figure. kimon@wtco.net wrote:

I had the same experience. You would not happen to be trying to use the file /usr/src/linux/vmlinux ? After compile the actual kernel resides under /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/. I am assuming an x86 machine. Try the file zImage, it should be a better size.

I can't understand this, since I cut nearly everything to the quick. My stand-alone system has no networking, etc..

I tried installing it anyway, and 'lilo' kicked out saying that the kernel (system) is too big, so back to the old kernel, which was the default kernel from my install (which is about 1/2 meg).
