I just looked at the current YOU list and the KDE 3.0.2 updates were missing. Does this mean a fix is in progress for the missing handbooks? Henry -- When I discovered Linux I also discovered that I didn't need Microsoft anymore. SuSE 8.0 Linux user # 95851
Originally, I posted an inquiry regarding trying to get my CDR/W drive working. Although, not an officially supported piece of hardware, I was forwarded the following hopeful link. http://www.linuxgazette.com/issue57/stoddard.html Having read that: I know I have cdrecord and mkisofs installed. I have confirmed the ide-scsi module is present. However, several of the config files I was instructed to edit there do not exist on SUSE8, at least in the location or form the help page above-referenced would imply The problem begins when I try to get to /etc/rc.d/rc.local. No such file exists. /etc/rc.d is a shortcut to a different directory. Also, there is no /etc/conf.modules I realize I'm lower on the learning curve than many. So I'll go back to the SUSE manual and docs and see what I can find. If you have any constructive suggestions, I'd sure appreciate it. Thank you in advance, R. I have a SCSI Toshiba SD-M1401 DVD drive and it works wonderfully. I use Xine for viewing DVD movies with no problems at all. Later, Andy -- Andy Stewart, Founder Worcester Linux Users' Group Worcester, MA USA http://www.wlug.org

Normally ... any IDE DVD-ROM should work, just get a cheap one from the next store:-) For convenience, you should have a file like this named DVD-ROM.desktop on your desktop: [Desktop Entry] Comment=Mount and browse a DVD-ROM Icon=dvd_mount UnmountIcon=dvd_unmount ReadOnly=1 FSType=Default Type=FSDevice [Desktop Action Eject] Exec=kdeeject %v Name=Eject [Desktop Entry] Actions=Eject Dev=/dev/dvd FallBackApplication=kfmclient openURL audiocd:/ MountPoint=/media/dvd Name=DVD-ROM (end of file) Then you need a symlink like this: #ln -sf /dev/hdc /dev/dvd (depending on which IDE-device your DVD drive is, see at boot time) And a line in your /etc/fstab: /dev/dvd /media/dvd auto ro,noauto, user, exec 0 0 It should work fine then. For viewing DVDs with xine, just insert the DVD, start xine, and click the d4d switch. Cheers ... Wolfi ============================================= mailto:wolfi_z@gmx.net

In the U.S., just about any ATAPI DVD drive works depending on how new your BIOS is. I bought the cheapest one CompUSA had at the time, and it's worked great fro installs and movies. -- W.D.McKinney (Dee) http://3519098920

Thanks for your response. What DVD decoder are you using? MPlayer, xine, something else? -- JAY VOLLMER JVOLLMER@VISI.COM TEXT REFS DOUBLEPLUSUNGOOD SELFTHINK VERGING CRIMETHINK IGNORE FULLWISE

I'v been using the LG DVD drives with great success. Comes with some nice Windows software but no linux software of course Downside to them is that you can only change the zone 5 times. Upside is that there are firmware hacks available to allow you to change the zone as many times as you want. Simon On (27/07/02 13:15), Jay Vollmer wrote:

I have the LG DVD-ROM DRD-8160B (according to /proc/ide/hdc/model) and it works very well. It can handle any region without any hacks or tools too. //Anders

I open it as root with kwrite to be able to search if any of the strings to be added are already present. I could not get lilo to boot (on my 40GB drive) because of some quirk that I never quite understood, so I changed to GRUB. Don't do that unless you have several free hours and a hacker's mindset. # # I realize I'm lower on the learning curve than many. When I rebooted everything loaded and cdrecord -scanbus showed by ATAPI CD-RW/DVD as a scsi drive on /dev/sr0. I can also access it as /cdrecorder, /dev/cdrecorder and /dev/scd0. Good Luck. It plays CDs fine. When i try to stream anaudio link it pops up a dialog box saying: **Couldn't Open Audio** 1. Please check that you have the correct output plug-in selected. 2. No other programs is blocking the sound card. 3. Your soundcard is configured properly Same happens when I try to play an mp3 as well. None of the exisiting output plugins appear to work. Any hints or directions would be appreciated. Thanks Coop

Are you running kde ? Make sure you installl the xmms-kde rpm as well, it comes with the arts drivber plugin. if you're running gnome there likely is a gnome-xmms rpm with similar. If you are running KDE, you can also try: - stop KDE's sound daemon artsshell -terminate - pick OSS sound driver - play mp3

Try resetting your sound drivers, as root: /usr/sbin/rcalsasound restart -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://counter.li.org

I had this problem just yesterday! I fixed it by running alsaconf. My sound card was not recognized, alsaconf probed around for it, found it and Bobs your uncle, MP3s played. By the way, I'm using the OSS output plugin. --rickey
