Re: [SLE] Nice program to make tape backups & mirroring
You could try using tar. That's what I use. No bells, no whistles, it just
works. I've tried other progs myself but always end up coming back to tar.

Can amanda back up to a second disk instead of to a tape? Considering the price of hard drives these days, we'd really like to use disks here instead of tapes. At once point I thought I saw that Amanda supported that, but when I look on it's web site, I can't find any references to support for disk backup. ---------------------------------------------------- Jonathan Wilson System Administrator Cedar Creek Software http://www.cedarcreeksoftware.com Central Texas IT http://www.centraltexasit.com
You can backup things on hard disks too with amanda.. In the documentation look for "Holding Disk". If i remenber you can configure amanda to make an image of the backup that is going to be dumped to the tape. But it can be configured to only make the image on the disk. Augusto.. I've tried other progs myself but always end up coming back to tar.
Backing up to another disk, this work fine for me :- tar clf - . | ( umask 0; cd /mnt; tar xvf - ) -- best wishes --- ____________ sent on Linux ___________
The problem with tar is that if a disc gets corrupted or justs blows... you have to install suse.. and then make the restore (remember that a fresh suse 7.1 pro takes a looooong loooooong time ....and the you have to restore the tar..... currently im doing something like this. "dump -L backup -0 /" (dump uses per default /dev/st0 to dump the data...) if something goes bad i belive that a full restore can by made with "restore" (hope). cc: Subject: [SLE] Nice program to make tape backups & mirroring Hi !
Does anyone know a good program for making backups in suse 7.1 pro version?. We have a HP Surestore (blabla)24 (24GB) at work and i'm currently doing the backups with dump.... i tried to make them with amanda but is quite complex...
Another question... is it a way of mirroring 2 IDE disks? (without ide raid)
TIA

No that is not correect. What you do is break out the cd's and boot into rescue mode. There you are running linux from a memory disc and can pretty much do whatever you want (command line only and no reisser 3.6). I do this often and it works VERY well under all circumstanses. It takes about 60 seconds to get there. Just hit abort install at your first chance and go to rescue mode. -- Mark Hounschell dmarkh@cfl.rr.com
