Hi all, At home I have a Soundblaster Live. This card can handle multiple audio streams, for example, I can listen to music, and the kde plings and plongs will still sound, and if someone phones me on skype, it will ring while the music is playing. At work, I have an old Soundblaster 128, which doesn't have this functionality in hardware. I know arts does this, but arts always lag (ever tried to watch a movie with sound going through arts?), and not all sound apps can talk to arts. I also know that ALSA can handle this. I've seen it done, but for all the things I've tried, I can't get it to work. I know it can be done, I've seen it done (saw it on a audiophile's PC, old redhat with alsa added by hand). Does anybody know how to do this? Thanks -- Kind regards Hans du Plooy SagacIT (Pty) Ltd hansdp at sagacit dot com

You must set up the dmix plugin for ALSA. The nice folks from amaroK have a page on their wiki with instructions for doing that, have a look at http://amarok.kde.org/wiki/index.php/Setting_up_Dmix_for_ALSA Not long ago I updated ALSA on my SuSE 8.2 box and succeeded with setting the dmix plugin on my machine. If you can't get it done, just drop me a message and I can send you my adoundrc.dmix file. Regards, -- Andreas Philipp Noema Ltda. Bogotá, D.C. - Colombia http://www.noemasol.com

Thanks Andreas, I actually read about the dmix plugin in the ALSA docs, but the example they give won't work on my machine - gives me errors messages that I don't understand :-) My /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf file doesn't look too much like the example they give on the ALSA site.
http://amarok.kde.org/wiki/index.php/Setting_up_Dmix_for_ALSA Great, thanks! I have to run out to clients now, will try it and get back to you after.
