[opensuse] Thunderbird loses icon on panel - openSUSE 12.1
I have installed Thunderbird on my computer. When I try to add it to the panel, the icon that appears is just a white "page" with the lower right corner turned up. Even going into the icon settings fails to add the icon. The proper icon appears when opening the settings, but disappears after clicking OK. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Which desktop environment? Which Thunderbird? I'm not very familiar with icon stuff but at least for Gnome there was a missing icon cache update in the package which has been fixed for Thunderbird 8 (coming to 12.1 pretty soon). I have no idea if that can affect other desktop environments though. Wolfgang -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Sorry, it's KDE and the version of Thunderbird that installs with 12.1. As I mentioned, there is an icon settings, but while the correct icon appears while in settings, it disappears when closing. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
Forgot to mention, the correct icon appears in the menu. James Knott wrote:

Hi Wolfgang, Is there now better information to hand about when TB 8.x (and I assume Firefox 8.x) for 12.1 will become available, please? Actually I though it already is. There was some detail to figure out end of last week but everything was sorted out for 12.1. So let's translate to "very soon now" is my guess. And you are free to use the packages from the mozilla repo also ;-) Wolfgang -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Hmm, all very interesting.... :-) . I have the mozilla repo selected and enabled since I installed 12.1 but there has been no movement from this repo. Do I need to use 'zypper dup --from xxxx' to get thye 8.x versions or perhaps alter the Priority to something less than the default of 99? This is the usual vendor lock. You get no updates offered from a different vendor by default. I'm not sure if raising the priority would help with that. Once you have switched to the OBS version you will get updates the initially you have to do something to switch. "Wot a way to run a business" :-( . No wonder people prefer to stay with Windows or Apple.... OK, I have done 'zypper dup --from' and now have TB 8.0 and FF 8.0 :-) . It's a thankless job I know but somebody has to do it..... Look at this whole thing from the user's perspective. A user is running opensuse 11.4 and he has both TB and FF versions 8.x running which were installed by 11.4's updating schemes - either Yast or zypper. He then installs the new all-singing, all-dancing, you-beaut *"unleashed"* opensuse 12.1 but......there is a regression in this very latest *"unleashed"* release in that it only has outdated version of both TB and FF. Religiously running zypper refresh/patch/up each morning with the correct OBS repo (Mozilla) selected does not update TB and FF to what he had in 11.4. He then reads a post stating that both FF and TB v8 for 12.1 are "coming real soon now" and when nothing happens during the daily zypper exercise he asked the question. He gets an answer. But still nothing happens when he runs zypper refresh/patch/up. Then the idea comes to mind that perhaps doing a zypper dup --from - which is something he never had to do when using 11.4 - may do the trick and, it so happens, it does do the trick and he now gets v8 of TB and FF. He then makes the comment which is appropriate and relevant to the situation. But there somewhere is an error in your perspective. 11.4 behaves the very same way with vendor changes as 12.1 does. There is no difference between them. So your theory is broken. The issue is that the Firefox and Thunderbird 8 releases were actually done like one day before the gold master of 12.1. It was too late to put them into the GA version and because of the release stuff it also is delayed compared to 11.4. That's just a technical detail. The other option would have been not to update Firefox in 11.4 when it was ready for it. Ce`? You runs 'zypper up' and its tells ya that there is an update to Firefox and Thunderbird so ya tells it to do the update. Ya don't sit there and think, "What may happen in 12.1 when I installs it: will it have v8 or won'ts it? Does I ignore wot zypper is telling me in case I falls fowl of what may happen if I's ask a question later when I''s installs 12.1?" :-) . But perhaps I misunderstand what you are saying.....which is likely. BC

Ok, time to open a bugreport for your desktop environment. There is nothing more to be done from the application package. Sorry, Wolfgang -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
