Hello - I would really like to see SuSE overcome it's adversion to adding djb's software in the distribution. I see even the mail server for this runs list ezmlm which is dbj's mail list software. (see http://cr.yp.to/ezmlm.html) Now maybe a thought would be to stick it all a special directory called djb ? (See http://cr.yp.to/distributors.html) Anyone else running qmail/vpopmail/qmailadmin/etc.,etc. ? Best Regards, Dee

Agreed. I love qmail, but I had to install from source. Actually, even if SuSE packaged qmail I would still install from source as that's just my way of doing things. The nice thing about djb's software is that they are so stable. qmail 1.0.3 has been the "latest" version for years now. I would also definately include daemontools and djbdns in the distro. Josh

I did the same and I'm very happy with it. However, Yast complains since neither sendmail nor postfix are installed. Recently I also switched to apt4rpm but I'd like to have some sort of "empty" qmail >RPM to satisfy the "dependencies". Any idea? It also runs qmail and dnscache. It's not really an aversion, it's just not very practical. I've considered making unofficial qmail packages but o The required /var/qmail and /service directories violate the FHS (/service isn't necessary if you don't use daemontools). o qmail and other djb software is something that really needs to built from the ground up if you are ever going to understand how it works (this seems to be the opinion of the qmail list as well) o We already have maintained packages for sendmail and postfix and unofficial packages for exim. Three MTAs should be enough. Of course, djb would consider all of the above reasons to be lame. -- -ckm

Fortunately, once you understand djb's "scheme", it's fairly straightforward to build from scratch. Thanks for the input, Josh
I ended up have to put Debian on our company servers (Stable) in order to have a nice systems using djb apps. I thought that it would be nice to have something on the CD's with appropriate docs saying it was djb's software and is not FHS if used with daemontools, etc. In light of all the new security issues in the post 9/11 corporate mindset, it was my choice to use qmail/vpopmail/qmail-scanner/etc., to set the stage for the best in MTA and associated services. We also run djbdns for the same reason and happily so. I know I am not alone in this. Really like SuSE but.... there are .deb's for all of djb apps. Thanks Chris.
