I seem to be having a problem on boot up with 8.0. The system hangs at the point in the boot process that it says "Starting Hardware Scan on Boot"...it just sits there and doesn't get any farther. The system is still responsive and I can ctrl-alt-del to reboot. After 3 or 4 retries it will get past this to finish off the boot process. This options comes right after the "Starting HotPlugging Services [net pci usb]" portion of the boot process. Any insight would be appreciated, since I've never seen this problem b4 with any other kernel's or OS versions. TIA __ Mark Doucette kranked@oberon.ark.com WinFree and Lovin' it. SuSE Rox Linux! This happens to me on my laptop, but it actually finishes booting if you just sit there 2 full minutes. Be patient! I think mine is hanging because it doesn't like the internal Sony modem, but I dunno. I've just lived with it so far since I don't reboot too often. I'd love a fix for this too. Mark Doucette wrote:

I waited 15 minutes once with no response lol. Had a shower while it was booting. I normally don't reboot very often, but since I noticed this I have been doing it to test it. I'll try and let it go for as long as it possibly takes, but a fix is what's important to me. thanks On Sunday 05 May 2002 11:52 am, Brian W. Carver wrote:

Thats certainly too long!

Needs more testing, like what do you have attached to the computer hardware wise, both internally and externally? The USB mouse issue was fixed in my case buy taking it off of the USB hub and plugging directly into the PC itself, weird but it worked. Matt
thanks

insserv -r hwscan will remove it from the boot.

Thanks for that info, but what will put it back in the boot if it's ever needed? It's my guess that this is scanning for new hardware that might need to be configured, right? Christopher Mahmood wrote:

'man insserv' should tell you that :)

Yes. It was a repeatedly wished for feature, that SuSE Linux would detect hardware added after installation. Philipp
A write up, or some info on hwscan would be nice. I can't seem to find anything on it. BTW..you can start and stop it in yast2 in the runlevel editor portion. Same thing insserv does..start and stop scripts inserted into different runlevels etc. I've got it turned off for the time being, but that doesn't solve anything about why it was hanging like it was. Cheers Mark On Monday 06 May 2002 12:25 am, Philipp Thomas wrote:

I won't ask where you looked. /usr/share/doc/packages/hwinfo

Maybe you have some ISA cards? -- -ckm
Hi Chris, Oddy enough I looked for info on hwscan, not hwinfo..seems odd eh? Thanks for pointing me to hwinfo though, and no I don't have any ISA stuff...and it only hangs once in a while then doesn't then will again etc. etc. The system isn't freezing..just stalling at that part of the boot process. Only slightly...if you look at the init script you'll see that it's just running hwinfo.

No ideas...you might want to send the hwinfo output: hwinfo --reallyall | mail -s hwinfo hwinfo@suse.com -- -ckm
