I need info on usage trends (unix/mac/linux/windows)
Hello all, I need to find a good source for stats on usage. I would like to get a comparison between 1994 and 2004 on what percentage of market share MS had/has over the other OS's. I really just need the numbers but I would like to show a trend as to how users, after becoming more knowledgeable are migrating away from MS products. Thanks, d33p th1nk3r

So, without knowing the numbers, you already know both the overall trend and the reason for it? That's the wrong way around to do research! As for actually being helpful in your search, I'm afraid I don't know! How dare you insult Gartner and Meta group like that. It is a perfectly valid method of research that shoddy marketeers have been using for decades, if not centuries. Remember the golden rule of journalism: if you don't already know the answer, don't ask the question; you might not like what you hear.

I beleive google has worked out some statistics on Linspire and are hoping to do the same for other distros, but I think any Linux figures are going to be vastly wide of the mark as there are no per-seat licenses. I have 5 boxen with SuSE 9.1, Mandrake 10.0 and gentoo behind my firewall which is also Linux, I can't see how my setup will ever say I have more than one Linux box. MS would also count me as a XP installation, though the new laptop's HD had XP eXPunged moments after the first successful boot. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce .... The only real idea is how much has actually been sold in terms of box sets or seats under license.

It still doesn't say much, 1 box set of Linux is often installed on may be tens or hundreds of PC's, so no numbers can be inferred from the one purchase. For Windows, you can approximate, with Linux, who knows, it's a pointless exercise as whatever number you come up with is plainly wrong. Even on Solaris, I've used one box set to install on a large number of machines, though you can guage the numbers as Sun ships a set with each server. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce ....
