Please, reply to the list. I answered your question in my other reply. I wasn't laughing in anyone's face, and I would appreciate it if you would take that childish accusation back and appologise. I saw someone making a claim on this list (not being able to set different wallpapers). You should never take such claims for granted, but you should always try to simulate the problem. I tried it myself, but it didn't fail for me, and I reported that back to the list. That's all I did, in the spirit of cooperation. -- Amedee -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
At first: sorry for the accusation... blame it on me the fact I forgot the cultural difference between our countries. Here, it could be normal, not offensive :( I got a little stressed seeing the way my topic follows... It is not anymore a discussion about how to set different wallpapers: it's a discussion about KDE's quality... It became a simple flame war, except for a little group that still discuss about the real problem. I tried here to set a wallpaper in each workspace, but it sets the same for every workspace. So, if there's any other option that have to be changed, please let us know. And I still don't know two things: when is KDE 4.2 being released? And is it coming with Suse 11.2? Thanks and sorry... Same here: setting a wallpaper for one workspace just sets the same for all eight of my workspaces (virtual desktops, actually; are we talking about the same thing at all, i.e. is workspace=desktop?). And no, this is not a visual gimmick: I need this feature to differentiate between my various areas of work at a glance. If you have, say, eight instances of a program open, each for performing a specific work task, it helps hugely to have eight different wallpapers or desktop colors to immediately warn you which task you're currently on. It really helps productivity, believe me. Actually, for me, it's the compelling reason (besides, uhm, overall desktop stability) why I just can't switch to KDE4 although I really want to. So, could anyone be so kind as to advise what steps to perform in order to set different wallpapers (or desktop background colors at least) for different virtual desktops in KDE4? Does this work in the default openSUSE11.1 install at all, or do you need to update KDE4 from some external repo? Regards, JB Dne petek 09 januar 2009 ob 00:54:14 je Milho napisal(a):

I agree with you. I also don't like it that it has become a flame war. In fact, I only joined the discussion when it was already sliding downwards. I wanted to put the discussion back on track with some factual data. And there is nothing that irritates the trolls in this topic more than sensible people like you and me who have a reasonable conversation and a civilised exchange of ideas.
I tried here to set a wallpaper in each workspace, but it sets the same for every workspace. So, if there's any other option that have to be changed, please let us know.
I'll tell you how I did it. In the upper right corner of the desktop, there is a plasmoid to zoom out. When I zoom out, I can see 4 desktops on my screen. I click on the first desktop with the right mouse button, choose desktop settings, and select a wallpaper. Then I save my changes. Then, with the 4 desktops still zoomed out, I click with the right mouse button on the second desktop, set the wallpaper, save. Same for desktop 3 and 4. That's how I made the screenshot that I sent earlier. I agree that this method is clumsy. Also I have noticed that when I log out and back in, that all desktops revert to the wallpaper of the upper left desktop. So it still needs a lot of work. But one can't really truthfully say that it is totally impossible to set multiple wallpapers. I declare shenanigans to people who claim that. It only proves that they have not tried it themselves and that they are only repeating what others have said and written.
And I still don't know two things: when is KDE 4.2 being released?
The first question is easy to answer if you go to kde.org. Their most recent announcement is http://kde.org/announcements/announce-4.2-beta2.php There you can read: <quote> December 18, 2008. The KDE Community today announced the immediate availability of "Canaria", (a.k.a KDE 4.2 Beta 2), the second testing release of the new KDE 4.2 desktop. Canaria is aimed at testers and reviewers. (...) Since the release of KDE 4.1.0, more than ten thousand bugs were closed, showing a massive focus on stability in the upcoming KDE 4.2.0 which will be released in January 2009, 6 months after KDE 4.1. KDE 4.2.0 will be followed up by a series of monthly service updates and followed up by KDE 4.3.0 in summer 2009. </quote>
And is it coming with Suse 11.2?
KDE 4.2.0 release = January 2009 I don't know what the normal release schedule is for OpenSuse. Is it a fixed period, like every 6 months for Ubuntu? Or is it more "it will be ready when it's done", like for Debian? Eiter way, my guess is that OpenSuse 11.2 will be released many months after the release of KDE 4.2, so logically it would be included. But only an OpenSuse release manager could tell you for sure. I think we have a difference in terminology in this thread. Workspaces vs Desktops. In KDE3 we had "Desktops". We still have them in KDE4. systemsettings -> Desktop -> Multiple Desktops Lets stick with calling those desktops. So. pick any one of the four plasmoid-things - lets call them "workspaces" - and you still have 4 desktops in each of them. Suppose you put (and label them as such in Systemsettings) Desktop 1 - Mail Desktop 2 - Web browser Desktop 3 - File browser (Dolphin?) Desktop 4 - Terminal then these exist in each of the "workspaces". The "workspace" defines the wallpaper. Under KDE3 I don't have the plasmoid/workspaces but I can set a different wallpaper for each _Desktop_. Under KDE4 I can't Q.E.D. As I said, its a matter of terminology. If you call the things defined in 'systemsettings' "Desktops" then no, you can't set a different wallpaper for each desktop in KDE4 at present. I notice in the graphic you posted that the "panel" has a two-row "pager" plasmoid - the little "four square" wire-frame. So in addition to the four "workspaces" you also have four "desktops" that appear in each workspace. You could assign names and alter the "pager" options to show the names. I have just verified all of the above by doing it. What this means is that you are both right - but you are using "Desktop" to mean different things. If you right-click on the top of an application window you will get a pull-down that has an option "Desktop". This can be used to move the window to another Desktop - mail/web/files/terminal in my example. If you do you'll find it still has the same background in KDE4 but can have a different one in KDE3. This is one reason I'm using the "Desktop" in this context and "Workspace" in the other. If you know of a way to bind an application to what I have termed a "workspace" I'd be interested in hearing about it. -- "The number of UNIX installations has grown to 10, with more expected..." - Dennis Ritchie and Ken Thompson, June 1972 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Desktop, Workspace,... for me they are both words in a foreign language (English). If someone could translate to Dutch, then perhaps I could finally understand what the fuss is all about. Well, for me, in portugese, there's no major differences too... What I wanna do is this: In "Applications => Configure Desktop => Desktop = Multiple Desktops", I have the possibility to choose up to 20 virtual desktops, ok? I use the 4 virtual desktops as it comes as default since KDE 3, the first one I remember to use. These are the same that we can switch by pressing, as default, ctrl+F1, ctrl+F2, ctrl+F3 and ctrl+F4. In KDE3 we used to choose one wallpaper for each of this screens, these virtual desktops. Now, I can't do this anymore. This is what I want. I believe now there's no doubt anymore. If there's any, let's talk :) Thx again. MilhoXP -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
