firefox changed behavior "no video with supported mime-type"
Hi, tumbleweed firefox 129.0.1 i know it was working about 1 to 2 years in past, some update has changed this. and yes, it could be that the file is not really correct at the server. i got this error also from other sources especially when i use different nitter instances. changing the nitter instance shows video's which has this error at other instances before. is there something i could configure at my computer/firefox that the mimetype will be set correct according to the ending of the filename and the video will be played? here a own movie where i am pretty sure it was working before. https://www.becherer.de/Homepage/Kloepper/cobot-schweissen.MOV it shows the error "no video with supported mime-type" off topic: yes, for the technicians here, the machine is not adjusted perfect, to many sparks. simoN -- www.becherer.de

right clic on the icon and it gives option to download the file (that plays on my tumblewed) jdd -- https://dodin.org
I don't know if it has changed. I see complaints since 2016. Actually also Chromium doesn't play it, it instead just downloads it (it plays fine in VLC). The (for me) most convincing explanation is that it's an apple format. Probably the apple employee isn't nice enough to convince firefox's employee to include those codecs, or not enough money has flown, or both :-) Anyway you can convert the video to a format that firefox is willing to play (like mp4) using ffmpeg command line. Just in case you're not used to ffmpeg, the following command produces a file that firefox plays: ffmpeg -i cobot-schweissen.MOV -crf 18 -preset medium -movflags +faststart -c:a aac cobot-schweissen.mp4 (all one line) you can change the -crf number from 0 (highest quality) to 50 (lowest quality) and other presets (or none) according to your patience Am 17.09.24 um 19:19 schrieb Daniel Bauer:

Hmm, FF doesn't play it but I downloaded it and VLC is quite happy to play it. It says Codec: MPEG-H Part2/HEVC (H.265) (hvc1) I can well believe my FF doesn't understand that but maybe it could be persuaded. Another data point: $ file cobot-schweissen.MOV cobot-schweissen.MOV: ISO Media, Apple QuickTime movie, Apple QuickTime (.MOV/QT)
Thanks all for quick respond, yes, i am able to play it with external players. (after downloading it) and i have also (looooong in past) converted files. the question was more or less, how to get firefox to automatically play it (in an external palyer) did anybody use a extension, or is it possible to configure it in about:preferences / applications / content Type here i am only able to play it after download :-(( simoN -- www.becherer.de
Ok, i see i have 2 different problems: MY video seems to be played never in firefox, because of the codec but: on the nitter instance: (nitter is a alternativ twitter/x gui without account) https://nitter.privacydev.net i got a lot of videos "no supported mime-type" if i open the same page on https://xcancel.com (another nitter server) the video play well. if i right-click on the not working video (nitter.privacydev.net), and say: open in an new tab, the video will be played in a new tab. mp4 files .mp4:
file .... ISO Media, MP4 Base Media v1 [ISO 14496-12:2003]
i have not copied here the complete url, because i do not like to have world-political discussions here. i do not use "X" only sometimes nitter, so if somebody is familiar with some contend maybe he is able to provide a complete link with cats or dog videos. i could also make a private mail with my links to the page if somebody is interested in the problem. in chromium there are both working well. so maybe a bug in firefox. simoN Am 17.09.24 um 20:06 schrieb Simon Becherer:

there is most probably at least one group about "browser" or whatever your langage is. In french it's "navigateur" (fr.comp.infosystemes.www.navigateurs - strange name, probably for historical reason) may be comp.infosystems.www.browsers.misc (not very active) one can search on a web based server https://www.nemoweb.net/ jdd -- https://dodin.org

Yes, but alt.comp.software.firefox is specific about firefox, is pretty active and has not been subverted by trolls and politics. There is another one on Thunderbird. They are the closest thing to official support groups on both applications (which I think they did exist as moderated groups somewhere). -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. DH> Another data point: DH> $ file cobot-schweissen.MOV DH> cobot-schweissen.MOV: ISO Media, Apple QuickTime movie, Apple QuickTime DH> (.MOV/QT) Good point! The difference is that vlc is built with ffmpeg-4.4.4. If you build vlc with a later version of ffmpeg, playback of Codec: MPEG-H Part2/HEVC (H.265) (hvc1) in vlc will result in no video with sound. However, MPlayer, which uses the latest ffmpeg, plays back all HEVC codecs without any problems. In fact, it correctly recognizes the file format and plays back the file without any problems. I'm having trouble with this..... (_ _? Incidentally, in my environment, 1. seamopnkey - OK 2. vivaldi - NG 3. Firefox-esr - NG No video with supported format and MIME type) 4. ffplay (7.0.2) - No video with sound 5. MPlayer (1.5.r38637-13) - OK 6. xine (1.2.3, built with ffmpeg 7.0.2) - No video no sound What happens.....? Just a silly idea: can you rename to lowercase extension and try again?

Yes, but inside a black window that seems the internal video player. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.5 x86_64 at Telcontar)

no, you could download and start firefox with the file. it does not matter how the name is.

I copied it to my own apache server, to ~/cer/files directory, and no matter the extension the result is the same (.mpeg, .avi). I would think that apache is generating the mime type with "file" on the fly. I wonder if I can force the mime type manually somehow, but I am not fluent at Apache. Page info on FF says the type is "video/quicktime" -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.5 x86_64 at Telcontar)
